    Help needed: 3FE rebuild problems

Hey everyone, so I'm looking for anyones recommendations based on experience with a 3FE. Here's the situation: 92 FJ80, 3FE, engine seized, I got a replacement and it's been rebuilt by a shop, installed by another shop. Pressure test when cold is good, but once it heats up, it starts dumping...

Lights turn off when engine is running???

I just wanted to drop an update here. I was finally able to track down a replacement headlight switch for the 76 after buying 2 incorrect ones. I swapped the switch, and now the lights work as intended!!! I'm perplexed as to how a switch would have a fault like that, especially after a...

Lights turn off when engine is running???

I'll try this, although I have replaced all of the wiring from the headlights to the connector under the dash (that connects the ignition/headlight switch etc) I also went back and cleaned/tightened the ground straps at the battery, alt., starter. All fairly new and solid. I don't have a...

Lights turn off when engine is running???

Yeah, could be. This has been an issue since I got the truck, so I've replaced the ignition switch, and all wires from that ignition switch plug to the headlights, as well as replaced headlight plugs. All solder joints were using the solder melt heat shrink tubs, with twisted wires inside...

Lights turn off when engine is running???

That is with the engine off testing from the battery negative to the powered headlight connector, with the lights turned on. I just tested that again to verify. The same test with the engine running gives me 0 V

Lights turn off when engine is running???

With the engine off it measures .36v and with the engine on it’s 0.0v. I’ll look for a ring but I havent seen one

Lights turn off when engine is running???

Yes, Positive PIn -> (-) doubles. Ground Pin -> (-) stays at 00.00

Lights turn off when engine is running???

Oh my bad. I disconnected the bulbs, trying to remove variables. Corrected values: Ground PIn -> (-) = 0.00 Positive PIn -> (-) = 0.5 (tried high and low beam pins, same result) Block -> (-) = 1.1 (Thank you for your help, btw.. I owe you a coffee!)

Lights turn off when engine is running???

    Ground PIn -> (-) = 3.1 Positive PIn -> (-) = OL (tried high and low beam pins, same result) Block -> (-) = 1.1

Lights turn off when engine is running???

OK, alternator unplugged. Engine off, lights on I get 11.98 V between + battery and ground on headlight plug. Engine on and it drops to .1 V Engine on, lights off and it’s still at .4 V Hooked alternator back up and ran the same test with the same results

Lights turn off when engine is running???

To clarify, I’m getting 12.98v between + on the battery and the headlight plug ground. That’s correct, right?

Lights turn off when engine is running???

Scratch that. User error for me. Let me set a new baseline. I do have a solid continuity from the headlight plug to - battery terminal. With lights on, engine off I’m getting 12.98v between the headlight plug and battery. With lights on or off, engine on I’m getting .1v between the...

Lights turn off when engine is running???

Oh great call! I unplugged both bulbs and continuity was lost! Thanks! I’ll work on a ground patch and report back

Lights turn off when engine is running???

It could be, but the upgraded headlight harness has a wire that goes directly to the ground terminal on the battery. So I feel like that’s a pretty solid connection directly to the circuit.

Lights turn off when engine is running???

I’ve got solid continuity between the ground terminal of the headlight connector and the negative terminal of the battery. I also get 12 V from the positive terminal of the battery to the ground terminal of the headlight connector when the lights are OFF. When they are ON it goes down to .2V
