I got a second old school fuel cap, pulled gasket out, slipped it over the original gasket. Thus I have two gaskets on one cap and it seal, marvelously well. Cheers!

Another thing we did as a fund raiser back in the day--we ran checkpoints for SNORE and other race promoters. I've been gone for 20 years and inactive for 30 so I don't know if they're even racing open desert anymore. But it was a thing we did. Some stuff from back in the day:
