72 FJ40 - Door Locks How to Install

I read the info at Early FJ40 door lock cylinder removal? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/early-fj40-door-lock-cylinder-removal.738968/ and found the posting by FJmoneypit very informative but on the drivers side when I removed the latching mechanism and the access panel I found that I...

72 FJ40 - Door Locks How to Install

Yes the spring clip secures the lock itself to the door. But to get to the spring clip while installing the lock there is no room to reach the clip within the door panels - the access holes are not large enough to use fingers or needle nose pliers.

72 FJ40 - Door Locks How to Install

I recently bought new locks for my 72 FJ40 - for the driver's side and rear lift gate. I tried removing the driver's side interior door latching mechanism but found that wasn't the way to install a new door lock. Do I need to totally take apart the door panel in order to install a new lock...

    Checking Fluid Levels

The leak was most definitely UNDER the center of the vehicle and appearing to come from the bell housing junction to the next component in line to the rear (that would be the transmission?) But, like roof leaks, fluid leaks don't always drop off the vehicle exactly where the leak is coming...

    Checking Fluid Levels

I have a 72 FJ-40. The owner before I purchased it or the owner before him converted it by putting in the 350 V8 & a 4-speed transmission. In general it works well. But it had a fluid leak mid-chassis and by testing the oil dip stick it wasn't the oil. Now the leak has stopped, but I am...

    72 FJ40 Ammeter re-wiring question

I had to pull my instrument panel and with that I disconnected the ammeter wires. Stupid me, I did not mark the individual wires as to which wire went to which ammeter terminal. So on re-assembling the instrument panel, I just hooked one of the ammeter wires to the terminal nearest the minus...

Alternator relocation and wiring - What gauge wire?

Drew - It sits inline between the battery and the alternator. Most of the loads in stock form come off the alternator side of the ammeter. So if the ammeter is +, there is enough current to power all your loads and current is flowing into (ie charging) your battery. If (-) then it's flowing away...

For Sale 78 fj40 jump seats & Rear Doors

Hello, I am interested in your 78 FJ40 jump seats. Am I correct in assuming that these are the short width seats that fit between the roll bar rear uprights? Are they still available? And, if so, can you post some pictures. Thanks

    Ammeter 30A - 2 Questions

Don (a.k.a. handcannon) - I don't have any objection to your jumping onto this thread, but you might get more targeted suggestions/advice by starting a new thread with your question. Pin_Head - thanks for the info. 20ga did indeed seem TOO SMALL to be carrying the full electrical load of the...

    Ammeter 30A - 2 Questions

djcfj40 -- Thanks for the info. and thanks for the offer of some fusible link wire. Since there is a NAPA store pretty close to the house, I'll check there first. If I run into any problems I will most certainly contact you to see if the offer is still available. It is hard to imagine using a...

    Ammeter 30A - 2 Questions

I'll have to check the Alternator. I never mentioned its capacity because I don't know. Where would I find the capacity? Would it be on a label or somewhere else? Also, while looking for Fusible Link I am having a tough time finding anything for the FJ40. However I am finding some 'raw'...

    Ammeter 30A - 2 Questions

Rudi - thanks for the excellent clarification. I'll begin looking to find a "fusible link" to replace the existing fuse. Any advice regarding the ammeter capacity: * OK to stay with the current 30A? * Or, considering the fuse/fusible link 40A rating, should it be changed to a 40A?

    Ammeter 30A - 2 Questions

fusible link - "is smaller than the rest of the wire so it will burn out first" Wouldn't that result in the same thing as a Slow-Blow fuse -- "if it blows you have no power to anything"

    Ammeter 30A - 2 Questions

Again, thanks for the info. Yes, the vehicle worked when I bought it 6 months or so ago, but I never paid any attention to the ammeter reading then. As you say, it is usually reads 0 when everything has been working fine. And it is 0 when it isn't working at all. At least the vehicle was...
