Hey all,

I am getting ready to install an AUS H55 w/ split case into my RHD '81 HJ47. Other than drive shaft mods, what other issues may I be faced with? I've been told that the DS's and cutting in the pto shifter are the only mods but want to see what you all say.

Thanks for any input.

It appears that the H41/H42's have a lower profile top plate than the H55. How will the H55 fit up to the stock tranny hump if it does sit taller? Is there cutting to do and if so, does anyone have pics?

thanks

I have a pre 79 rtransmission hump in good condition that I am about to sell if you need it to use to use for sections to add to your existing hump. if it comes to that. if it does not fit it will prolly fit in my lv in that I made my new hump tall enought to accomidate an h55 =p

does your troopie have a split case in it or not? my 81 has a one piece case, my 84 has a split case.
what do you plan on using for an e-brake?

how about the trans/t-case x-member?

the trans tunnel should clear at the trans but the t-case might hit. you'll have to modify it. you'll also need a longer speedo cable, drive shaft mods including lengthening/shortening and flanges , proper t-case linkage for the 5spd split case, slight bell housing mod to create clearance for the larger front bearing retainer on the h55f,....

about that pto shifter mod. does your troopie have a pto? if so, the one-piece t-case pto will not work with the split case. the linkage is also completely different.

your troopie should have an h41 in it right now. fairly sought after so if you sell it after the swap is completed, make sure you don;t give it away for too cheap unless it needs to be rebuilt.

Thanks Merbes Fog & Orange for the links and replies...much appreciated.

Fog-will let you know what I find during install. Thanks for the offer.

Georg- I have a split case with the e-brake. The trans/t-case x-member is the cradle style that mounts to the trans. It's exactly like what's on my US '82FJ40. All of the H55 linkage is present.

slight bell housing mod to create clearance for the larger front bearing retainer on the h55f,....
Any links with details on this mod?

I have a pto gearbox sourced from Global. Mounted it up last weekend and it appears to work nicely. No linkage though so I'll need to find or fab that up.

I've got a buddy who's all over the H41. Took him about 5 sec to decide on that one.

that's good news!

your 4spd should have the short adapter on it. so after the swap your overall length will be about 3" more. so the driveline mods (shortening and lengthening) will still need to be done. the flanges will stay the same. the mod to the bell housing is very simple and will take you 5 minutes. you just have to create some clearance for two of the front retainer bolt bosses on the h55f.

parts needed:
h55f
shifter
shifter knob
5th gear oil funnel
main shifter for t-case (part that pivots on the side of the trans) different for a 4spd and 5spd.

you'll have to modify the front case half of the split case as well. one of the bolts that holds the case to the back of the 4spd will not be used with the 5spd. tap the hole with a pipe thread and install a pipe plug to keep fluid from swapping from the trans to the t-case and vise-versa.
as for the pto linkage, oem stuff is gonna be a bitch to find so make you own. you can get cheap heim ends at orchard. i'd run 3/8" stuff.

put a new clutch in there while you're at it unless the current setup has no signs of wear. i'd recommend either a factory or LUK clutch kit. the LUK kit is about $180. get a good look at the rear main seal as well. replace if necessary.

are you buying a new H55f or a used one? with or without t-case?

Good stuff! I have everything you listed except the 5th gear oil funnel.

The mods you list seem pretty straight forward and will give them a go. I friend has some oem pto linkage available that I could copy, but I'm not sure yet what year it was from.

Plan on ordering a rear main for the 2H today from SOR unless you know the part number or another good source. Also plan on doing the clutch. Might be a dumb question, but are the 2H clutches different than the 2F? Can you suggest where to get one. What's the quality like of the LUK clutches.

I have a used H55/split TC from OZ. I suppose I'll use the split case that's on the truck now that has the ebrake on it, unless it's easy to swap the ebrake over to the new splitcase that's on the H55. Thoughts?

i'd get the clutch and rear main from your local toyota dealer or from Cdan on here.
as far as the t-case goes, the one on the 5spd will have the proper setup for the 5th gear funnel so no worries there. it'll also be set up for the fluid swap issue or elimination thereof.
you're gonna have to tear down the original split case to sell the 4spd trans. to do the ebrake swap, you'll need the main shaft from the donor case.
i would tear down the s5pd split case just enough to install the main shaft and ebrake kit. since you're already gettig parts from the dealer, you might as well get some new seals and gaskets for the t-case from them. if you plan on rebuilding the t-case ( i would do a close inspection, especially of the idler shaft and rebuild it if necessary ), then get a rebuilt kit. i have them in stock most of the time. make sur that whatever kit you might end up buying has oem japanese bearings and the idler shaft in it. the chinese stuff is crap........

as far as the clutch is concerned, my LUK catalog does not show a listing for the diesels. i know they make them, but i'm not sure if they interchange or not. i'm sure somebody on the diesel forum can answer that question. the luk catalog shows only clutches for vehicles commonly sold in the states...
the quality of LUK clutches and components is excellent. all their stuff is brand new, not remanned. they are the eom supplier for gm and chrysler amongst others. my 07 dodge diesel has the stock LUk clutch in it. i also use them exclusively when i do conversions or clutch replacements. good stuff!

pretty much the same as above except that you'll need a late 40 or early 60 series x-member to go under the t-case.
you'll need a modified 2f or a stock 3f bell housing.

It's in!

Thanks all for the advice above, very helpful. Big thanks to Jr(4Lo&Go) and Tim for helping with the install. It was pretty amazing to see two split cases in pieces strewn across the garage floor while we swapped the TC output shaft from one case to the other. Good to have friends with carnal cruiser knowledge and a good learning experience.

Started work on a new transmission cover due to the new position of the H55 shift tower and TC shifter.

The H55 sits higher and touches the front lip of the transmission cover opening under the heater. Had to bend/remove some metal to get it in. A little more trimming to do and then need to work on a spacer to raise the tranny cover.

Cover in place using 1/2" foam weather stripping to space it up. Fogblanket suggested welding on a metal spacer running around the lip of the tranny cover which sounds like a good idea. Could also make sleeves out of 3/8" hollow round stock for the bolts to slide through when mounting the cover.

Would thick closed cell foam be enough to support the cover or would metal spacer(s) be a better solution?

Think the PTO shifter is beefy enough? :D

for the front i would cut out the overlap part completely and fabricate a peice up the angle of the tranny hump. I bet you could use a 1" peice of angle iron plasma one side off to get it level and tap it so it could be bolted too. i added a pic and my thoughts crudely drawn on them.
this would free up the front end for movement and let you set the height of the plat a bit better.i bet you could also bend up some 1" square tubing and plasma the bottom off to make it the right height then tac it in. then you could skip using the foam and just use the rubber gasket. and tap the tubing or weld nuts to the bottom of it. just some ideas.

extending the tunnel cover forward would definetly look a lot cleaner and will probably be easier to build as well. i like the idea!

Scrapped the raised cover as it was looking pretty booty fab. Cut the center section out where the H55 sits the highest in front of the shifter and boxed it. Thanks for the tips. Done!

Nice work!

This is an excellent thread guys, good work with the install!

I am currently looking at buying an H55 from an HJ60 to install into my (funnily enough) 1981 HJ47!
This thread will be my go-to guide, so thanks for the help!

A question regarding the e-brake:

82Cruiser, did you end up swapping the existing transmission brake to the back of the donor transfer case? If so, was this a relatively easy operation?

Just wondering because my e-brake is stuffed, and I'm considering swapping to the rear diff drum park brake as found on 60 series models during the install.

Which of the two park brake types are more reliable?

Once again, thanks for the help.

Cheers,

Matt
