Yep, read that one. Nice job! I need a mount that I can move between cars.

Warpdriv, I just ordered one of these RAM Mounts. I'm planning to use it on a 2-day WABDR trip later this month. I'll post back with a review. If it doesn't work, I'll end up getting one of the pro-fit clips and adapting the mount to that. But I'd rather keep it up in my field of view than looking down toward the HVAC controls.

That looks beefy. I agree with you about keeping in your field of vision. Aim looking forward in seeing how it works out for you. Thank you.

So the RAM windshield mount puts it in about the same position as Rob's - face of iPad is event with front of dash hood. For me, it's too obstructive into line of sight. I'm 6' and have my seat at about a mid position. The RAM mount is extremely solid and holds the heavy iPad very well with no noticeable vibration. RAM does make extended arms which would allow the iPad to drop over the face of the dash and would most likely lower it to an acceptable level, although it would be partially blocking the stereo head.

I ended up buying a vehicle specific adapter - the kind that uses a thin metal plate which screws into the dash surround behind the trim plate. I then mounted the RAM arm/iPad holder to that. At first I was convinced it wouldn't work because there was too much flex in the thin metal which allowed the iPad to sway. However, in now over 300 miles of real-world offroad driving I have to say that what movement is there is completely irrelevant. Real-world deflection is just a fraction of what you can flex the mount with pressure. And perhaps a bigger plus is you can orient the iPad vertically. I keep the MotionX in track mode so direction of travel is always vertical.

Speaking of MotionX, it's very good software. It did get confused once where I had to restart the iPad. For whatever reason, the iPad lost GPS signal even though my secondary Nav (a 60csx) still had a solid lock.

The VSM set up as you have yours now was my backup if the dash mount failed - I think it's a solid choice.

Watch out for other apps hijackiing the GPS data stream... If I fire up Inrix traffic it sometimes blocks other apps from reading the GPS data. I'm sure they will take care of it but other apps can do the same.
