Someone made a mess of this vacuum pump

While having some work done on my alternator, I'm afraid the rebuilders made a mess of my vacuum pump.

1) It makes a crazy whirring / droning noise that is independent of engine speed. If I use up some vacuum it will go away and come back when the vacuum is strong enough again. Seems like a leak internal to the pump.

2) After coming to a stop at a stop light, the brake light comes on and off, apparently vacuum related.

I had no issues with this pump before the rebuilder touched it.

I strongly suspect that they did not properly replace the o-ring between the pump & alternator, the o-ring between the end-plate and the casing, or lube the carbon blades at reassembly.

Do those issues seem like a reasonable cause?

I'd like to pull the pump off, lube it, replace the rings with the proper ones and hopefully be done with this fiasco.

They told me these o-rings are hard to find at the local suppliers.

Does that make any sense? If I take the pump to any local parts store I should get what I need right?

Oh yes and I know they opened it up - I saw it laid out on the workbench. I have no idea why they opened up the vacuum pump but it was completely disassembled at one point.

At that point I just had to get my vehicle & parts out of that shop before they damaged something else, so it's home now.

I am sure you can get the correct rings from toyota. I can look up the part numbers if you need (once i am back from china).
Bad story about the alt.
Cheers

I see no reason why that O-ring wouldnt be standard stuff (probaply JSA or ISO dimensions).. Might also be worth taking apart the pump yourself and check if the vanes are ok...

O-ring: 96740-02063

blis - the vanes are ok. There is some scoring but not very bad compared to pictures I've seen here on mud.

Thanks for that part # Biche - is that for both rings?

I am dumbfounded at how poorly that went. :bang:

I took the pump off but I don't have a punch or a workbench where I can separate the pump and see what's inside. I'm stopped until I acquire a tool or find someone to open this for me.

However, I can already see problems. First, my pump is different from what I see in that diagram. Mine separates into three pieces. I have an "end-plate" on both the front and rear of my pump and both are held together by dowel pins.

1) The upper o-ring in that diagram is nowhere to be found. The bare vacuum pump is mated up to the bare alternator. There are no grooves on the alternator or the vacuum pump to indicate where an o-ring would go, however.

2) I can see orange gasket sealant oozing out of the pump so I suspect they used that instead of the o-ring called for in the manual.

Do I really even need an o-ring between pump & alternator?

Can anyone help me find a diagram so I can figure out what is missing?

I appear to have a slightly damaged oil seal / bearing rather than an o-ring between the pump & alternator. That seal is in the pump and goes around the shaft from the alternator.

Before I pop the pump open I sure would like to know what it should look like inside.

I'm pretty sure it's a Toyota pump - I just found a picture:

Specter Off-Road Land Cruiser Parts - Page 020 Land Cruiser Alternator & Starter

Confusingly, my vacuum pump looks like the pre 1982 pump even though I have an '84.

Sounds like someone has replaced it in the past

It seems odd to me that I need an o-ring between the alternator & the pump even though there's no grooves to hold one ...

It might cure the weird noise its making

Are those prices at Spectre for used alts?

Remanufactured I believe - used and rebuilt.

I just picked up a punch so I can pop those dowels out and open the pump up. Then I can confirm what I need exactly. I'll order it all from SOR and hopefully be done.

Ok, so it is indeed a pre-1982 alternator/vacuum pump, which is why my 1984 diagrams don't match.

I found:
  • No o-ring between pump & alternator
  • The 2 o-rings inside the pump are too small and are supplemented with silicon
  • One of the 4 blades was installed backwards
  • The seal looks damaged

I should be able to get 3 new o-rings, a new seal and crush washers from Spector but it'll be next week before they arrive. Toyota dealers can't do it any faster so I'll pick this up next week. If it weren't for the seal I might be able to find the rest locally but I'm just going to order it all in one go.

Cant you put a screw driver inside and lever it out(carefully)? Or if you can get to the other side, tap it out with a drift or socket extension.

Definitely can't get at it from the other side.

I tried the screwdriver bit (there is a grainy illustration in the FSM that looks like someone prying) but it is stuck in there tight. Probably for the last 27 years.

In the pic it looks like thay are levering it out with a small open end spanner. It wont hurt to apply some force as long as you dont go gouging the metal on the housing.
It will be tight "drive in the new oil seal with a socket wrench"

Aye, tight indeed. Hopefully the penetrating oil does its job.

I'm nervous about applying too much force but I'll try an open-end wrench. Thanks for pointing that out. The last thing I need is to make the situation worse.

This is a pic from my FSM (98154) but there is no pic of the prying it out with a screwdriver.

Good luck,

I got an email from tkorade who got his out using a screwdriver with a 90 degree bend at the end. I guess it is all about force. I'll let ya know how it turns out.
