Riding on the coat tails of last year I'd like to get a 2nd annual Cruiser-Q going. The consensus last year was to make this round an overnighter. Potentially two seperate groups heading out, those that want a family style cruise in the high country and those looking for some more technical crawling. All meeting at a preset destination for some camping and shooting the bull around the camp fire.

I propose the same weekend as last year....the last weekend of September. The Aspen's are turning colors, the trails will be snow free, and the evenings will be pleasantly cool.

I wanted to go to this last year but it is during archery season. So if I get an animal I will be there otherwise I will still be hunting.

I completely understand....come October I am stalking Samson's brother myself.

Heck bring your bow and hunt the Flat Tops... ;)

Pending the sale of my 60, or maybe having an 80, or bringing the Tacoma...I'm definitely in!

I wanted to get this back up on the Colorado Cruiser threads.

CRUISER Q II - Glenwood Springs and the Flat Tops Wilderness area. September 24-25. This is still an informal, "lets email and get something going" type event. No prizes. Not a sanctioned event. No club overseeing anything.

this will be an overnighter on the Flat Tops. We have some local folks sporting some super tricked out crawlers who can take people on the super gnarly trails and then we'll have people just out on a casual stroll in the high country.

loosly: plan on meeting in Glenwood the morning of Saturday the 24rd, we'll head up the flat tops and get a good camping spot (we'll have it dialed in beforehand). From there people can head out on there own or get with some folks who have volunteered to lead the crawler-crew and/or the casual-cruiser-caravan. We'll reconvene around dinner time at camp, get the fire going, put some meat on the grill, have some frosty beverages, etc...

THIS WILL BE A FAMILY/KID FRIENDLY EVENT. The only thing I'd say is that if you bring kids and/or dogs PLEASE keep an eye on them. We don't want a pack of 20 unsupervised dogs running in front of vehicles or through camp nor do we want little kids falling off of a cliff or getting lost in the woods.

more details to come.

Sounds cool - put it on my calendar, but to early to plan for yet. How far in advance do you expect to lock in attendance?

no worries. It's cool that you're planning on driving over for it. I figured some folks need a couple months to plan between travel, kids, hunting season, etc...

It'll be pretty informal so even if its a game time decision that would work to. Having a head count will just let us better gauge the location for camping and how many people we may have to get up any one trail...i.e. 50 rigs will move much slower than 5 or 10 and that could also dictate a camping location.

Just talked this over at the last Book Cliff Cruisers meeting and looks like we will add this to our schedule. Hard to say now but we probably will get 3-5 rigs to join in on the Cruiser-Q.

I spent about a week at White Owl Lake last September. It would be good for a small group but not 50! There are lots of boondock sites up there but a really big group might be spotted by USFS and they will undoubtedly require a permit. There is another lakeside campground further north that may have a group campsite. Suggest some advance research.

I think I drove all the 4X4 trails up there and none would be classified as "crawler" trails. Adams Lake was probably the hardest one I did and I saw a box stock 4-Runner on street tires run it with no trouble. But it was dry......

Anyway the Flat Tops is a great area and I am looking forward to another visit.

Ya I'm figuring that if we have too many people that the FS would want to get money out of someone in the way of a permit....bummer that getting some folks together for a nice day out and some camping requires payment these days...

Agreed I do not think there are too many "crawler" trails up that way, but Ray (zgcruiser) was telling that he knew of some trails just to the west of that area that do require a bit more than over-sized tires.

I'll check back when I get some more information on locations, route(s), etc...

^^^^ If treated correctly your concern is a non issue.
Jonathan with BCC here. I'd like to tentatively put my name in the hat for this trip. Sounds like a lot of fun! I've never been in this area.

Well well well...we're less than a month out from Cruiser-Q2. I'm checking in with some local Cruiserheads to help with logistics and route planning and then I'll be coming back to everyone with the plans.

*Cruiser Q2
*September 24th and 25th.
*Overnight camping trip.
*This event is NOT affiliated with any club or organization and NO money of any sort is being exchanged to participated.
* No official check-in and gear inspection station so bring a trail ready vehicle, camping gear for a night in the high country, and a smile.
*BYOB & BYOF. I'm trying to figure out a way to lug my grill up on the ride for everyone to use...I'll get back to you on that one

* time table, route details, and camping location to come shortly. No matter what we'll be meeting in Glenwood prior to departure.

Here it is:

Saturday September 24th:

GWS Tram lot at 9:30-10am. Depart at 10am. Transfer trail -> Grizzly Cow Camp (set-up camp) -> Folks can get out and sight-see as they wish. I'll stick around camp and get my awning set-up, get firewood cut for a nice camp fire. I think I can break my grill down enough to fit it in the back of the Cruiser. BYOB adn BYOF.

Sunday September 25th:

Head out as you'd like. A cool route out would/could be Blair Mountain -> Meadow Lake, and the other could be Coffee Pot with a stop at the Deep Creek over-look.

PM me with any questions. See you guys on the 24th.

There is a pretty good chance I may go up early and camp somewhere in the Flat Tops as I did last year. Probably White Owl Lake again. If I do I will come down to Grizzly Cow Camp probably on Friday to set up my camp early. I can't bring my trailer down that trail so will be tent camping. Any help needed in setting things up in advance please send me an email.

If the near constant rain in the high country continues I probably won't be taking my trailer up there. Last year I came down Coffee Pot Rd when it was a little wet and it was a muddy mess! So depending on the weather I will go up a little early, maybe Friday or just be at the Tramway and go up with the group. Either way I will be tent camping.

I suggest everyone bring a few sticks of firewood as there is not much available around the cow camp. BTW there is an outhouse there.

Any idea yet on how many are expected? There has not been a lot of talk on this thread.......

- there has not been much traffic on this thread and I only know of 3 other guys who have committed to this trip (not including myself). 1 maybe depending on vehicle readiness and 2 confirmed "no's".
- I spent from Wednesday night through Thursday night up on the flat tops. It was constant rain and all of the FS roads are very very muddy!! it rained friday and saturday (today) too. A friend of mine (one of the "yes's" for attending) drove teh lower part of transfer and said it was a huge muddy mess and some of the switchbacks were a little dicy.

I'm all for hitting mud on a trail here and there, but am not too keen on the idea of a family oriented trip that would be a continuous drive through muddy gunk the whole time. Lets keep an eye on the weather the next few days.

I am still all in. If it is too sketchy for the family adventure I hope a few guys are still willing to go for a "wheeling" adventure. I spoke to a buddy who did a loop from New Castle to Transfer, he said it was tough and fun. We could go that way but switch, Transfer to New Castle.

If things dry out, my Dad is going to come up from Boulder with his 80(stock) with hopes of getting to drive Coffee Pot. He drove some of it in his Camry(Dotsero side) a few years back, but stopped when it got muddy.

Either way, I look forward to getting up into the Flat Tops for a day or two.
