Details

This is the engine from my 78’ FJ 40 that was removed when I installed the Hi Po 4.4 Liter engine.

At worst, it is a good core for a rebuild and priced accordingly.

There is a possibility it is a usable 2F that may have a little life left before it needs a rebuild. If you are adventurous, have the time and skill to pursue this route, you own the results.

It is currently located in Canton, MS and can likely be transported to Knoxville, TN. Along the way is possibility, connect with @wngrog for costs etc.

Here is some detail to consider. Truck had ~120k miles and was running fine with good power, no significant oil consumption (even with a rear main leak), until the head gasket failed.

Compression was 120-130 in 4 cylinders when diagnosing the head gasket that was compromised between cylinders 2 and 3, which read 0 due to the leak between cylinders.

The Head gasket was replaced in Sept 2025, the valves were adjusted, new oil pan gasket and timing cover gasket was installed in Feb 2026, I planned on using it for a few more years until it had the last issue and decided at that point to take the nuclear option.

After all the resources were invested, it is speculated to be a cracked intake that kept this engine from running properly, could have been done during the head gasket replacement or later reassembly, but no guarantees.

Here is a long summary of the build thread and plea for help takeover of another thread to help understand the journey of this engine.

After startup the truck would run perfectly until it warmed up and then would develop a miss.

After a considerable amount of part replacement, Sniper, Fuel delivery, ignition etc., it would still not run after warm up.

I decided to ship the truck to @wngrog and replace the entire drivetrain instead of spending more money diagnosing this engine. A new H55 Transmission and TC with 3:1 was next on my list, figured may as well just do it all at the same time.

Here is the real plot twist on the new drivetrain, the DUI distributor was discovered to have slow turning and a slight click, thinking that was a possible cause of the poor running at operating temperature, a new distributor was installed in the new engine.

The new engine was installed and not long after start up, it developed the exact same issue as the old engine, bad miss after warm up.

After a degree of panic etc., vacuum was tested there was a noticeable leak after warm up, Sniper was resealed, still existed and finally concluded/strongly suspected there was a hairline crack in the intake.

New intake was installed and issue disappeared, well at least until the Fuel pressure regulator failed, now that has been replaced, all is well!
