My compilation of tires in size 255/85/16

Don't know where to put this, so will try here:confused: I needed a taller, 33ish, tire to fit 16" rim but not fat, so have been looking for tires in the 255/85/16 size. I have bought 5 BFG MT (on order) for my summer tires. Need to figure out what to use for winter. Anyway, here are the tires I found:

BFG MT
Maxxis MT-762 Bighorn
Cooper Discover ST
Dayton Timberline A/T
Interco TSL Thornbird
" TrXus MT
Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT
Toyo M55

Of course actual diameter will vary by manufacturer;p
Hope this is usefull for someone.

I don't know where you're from, but if you live in BC or a similar climate, get yourself a set of Blizzaks for the winter...the differance between their performance in icey conditions and a standard tire won't be believed until you try it yourself.

I tried Michelin Ice's on my Accord and the company car this winter, and they are good, but not as good as the Blizzaks we've had before. I had a set of Alpin's on a Jeep XJ, and the traction was good, excellent in fact, but they wore extremely quick. The Blizzaks I have on my L/C are doing very well...

You know when you are driving down the highway in slippery conditions, and idiots are passing you like there is nothing wrong with the road conditions???

Those are the people with Blizzaks!

Oh, and I'm just a very satisfied customer!

PS - All of the ice tires will eat themselves if you run them in warm weather - you might get three good winters out of a set, but they are alot cheaper than bodywork.
 
I live in Fairbanks, AK. My first winter here with this rig I had to buy studded tires right away. Even in 4x4 I would spin out at any time:frown: I had a set of Arctic Alpine on the golf we had and it did alright but was no good in fresh snow as the tire could not pack any snow into the treads, nothing sticks better than snow on snow. With our long winters, I have never considered BLiizzak's since it seems that they would wear out too fast, especially when you need to use them for about 6 months out of the year. I will probably either get the Cooper ST for winter, studded, or get another set of BFG MT and stud them.

Green Diamond and Nokian

I had (have) a set of Nokian tires on my bmw 530. the hakkapelita is an excellent winter tire for this car. never felt unsecure (even with rwd) and never added weight for traction. studdable, however, I don't think the size you're looking for is available.

also, do a search for Green Diamond tires. They are re-treads, but add what is akin to sandpaper to the rubber compound.

Not sure if they are available locally, but the price is cheap. i may try this on my 4Runner once my MT's are gone.

most everybody likes them.
They are China made just like the Maxxis Mudder.
They seem to be wearing ok. They balance up pretty good.
The quality is not near BFG Mud Terrain or GYear MTR but for the $ they are hard to beat.

Trained Killa runs them on his 40. He can give u some insight.
 
I'm told that Toyo is making (or will be soon) their Open Country M/T in LT255/85R16, load range E... specs below were posted at expeditionportal.com:

After much debating, and procrastinating I decided to go with the BFG MT's. I got five of them for $855 w/ shipping from onlinetires.com

Hmm... I just thought of something. Is there enough room for this tire on the floor in the back of your truck between the 2nd row seats and the tailgate? That's where my spare lives.

FWIW, I'm still undecided between the BFG KM and the Toyo M-55. Ruled out the Toyo M/T because of the cost - I'd hate to spend $250+ per tire and then have the set only last 30k miles. The BFG's at $100/tire less wouldn't bother me if they only lasted that long.

The tire fits well in the cargo area. I've also had a 35 in that area with no space constraints.

Thanks. I was too lazy to measure it, but figured it would fit okay.
