Which tranny is it?
What year is your 80 series?
What part of the world do you live in?

These would be good items to add to your sig line/ your profile. (maybe not the tranny part ;) )

I can recommend these guys:
Wilf's Transmission 604-872-5347

I've seen LC's out front of there shop, I spoke with Wilf, he's very familiar with the tranny, when I had a tranny serviced there last, it cost me less than the price he quoted.

yeah youll be fine with ATEB, they have probably serviced more 80 series JDM cruisers than anyone else.
I am pretty sure in the past they performed most of the work for all outback import cruisers before they headed north...
not sure anymore though

keep up posted and best of luck

There's a BIG difference between the 1992 and the 1993 model years (split is around 10/92) - the 442F became electronic with the 1993 model year.

The common fault on an electronic 442F is solenoid failures - noticed when the trans wants to "slip" but it's really starting in 4th gear. Often followed by no lock up in 4th.

Been down this road a few times lately with the electronic trans.

Check for VIN on ToyoDIY and get the month and year of production - then if you're into the 1993 model year you need to look at the solenoids.

high idle

thats why i think everybody is starting to have issues.low speed dashpot govener wont let it go down i just bent mine but should be plated but my mechanical apt is like my inglish grama

Other big issue with the early A442F is the TC burning out. Anybody running this tranny should have a temp gauge with the probe in the outlet union between the TC and the rad/cooler and keep a good eye on it. The temp will go over 150C real fast if you lug the tranny up a long hill.

I'd love the electro-hydraulic 1993 version. You can put a manual switch on it that will lock up the TC in any gear you choose. But then again, there's more to go wrong on it than the simple mechanical model.

Are the TC's from a 1991 and an electronic A442 from a 1993 the same? they're both from HDJ81's.

I looked on ToyoDIY but I can't find the torque converter.

And since we're on ToyoDIY, didn't they used to have diagrams? I look now and it all seems to be text.

Craig.

ToyoDIY did used to have diagrams, Toyota forced them to remove them... Bastards

Hmm, dunno. Rodney at automatictransmission.com.au would know, I think. ATEB might know as well. Although I'm not sure if OZ ever got the all-hydraulic tranny in the '80 series. They might only have the electrohrdraulics.

Just heard back from Rodney, they TC's are the same...so now I have a spare.

Interesting note for us fully hydraulic A442 people, Rodney told me that: "...we use the same Heavy Duty Extreme and Nomad Valve Bodies for both petrol and Diesel and this is because the transmissions computer system controls the shift points and not the Valve Body"

Just thought it was interesting. I wonder if I could use the electronic A442 from a 1995 gasser 80 into my HDJ81?

Craig.

Wiring in the tranny ECU might be a PITA. But then again, perhaps not. That would be a nice swap!

Pretty sure 1995 gasser would have an A343 in it.;) Quite a different tranny from what I understand.
