With all the Ham Radio chatter lately I thought I'd mention this. Looks like a nice little beginner radio for under $85 after rebate and it's a Yaesu not some cheap Chinese stuff (apologies to those of you using the Chinese handhelds).

Saw this on Ham Radio Outlet's website.

Yaesu FT-252 2-meter handheld $84.95 after $20 mail in rebate and free shipping from HRO... There's a Ham Radio Outlet location here in Phoenix. I think this was mentioned on another thread.

The reviews make it sound like a easy-to-use and program radio. Not too much of a leap if you're not sure about HAM or just want to listen in.

I believe this is the same unit as mclement85308 brought along with him on last weeks run. Seemed to like it so far...

Marc as a spotter radio, 2nd radio or a loaner do you still think the Yaesu is worth twice the price of the well received Chinese handheld?

I dunno. I've never used / heard either. But from what I understand about this "starter" radio it's easy to program and sounds pretty good. (seriously, I have to look at the manual for my Yaesu VX-170 handheld all the time. EVERY button has three functions. It's great to have features but...) The only nit most reviewers seemed to pick was that it didn't have a headphone jack. Yeasu is a great brand as is Kenwood.
