New guy here - see my photo in the introdution sticky...

My '87 FJ60 won't pass AZ smog - all the original equipment is there and hooked up. It Failed on both HC and CO. Load and idle.

Heres the numbers:
HC Loaded reading (35mph) 269 - limit 220 ppm
CO Loaded reading 6.98 - limit 1.20 percent
HC idle reading 950 - limit 220 ppm
CO idel reading 7.17 - limit 1.20 percent

Just purchsed this 2 owner rust free 60 from the western slope of CO - it runs good, and gets about 12mpg on the madin voyage from Junction to Tucson - 65 -70 mph GPS (on 33 inch tires). The PO had a carb kit intalled by a cruiser speciallist - Safari LTD about a year ago, Valves adjusted about 2 years ago, all less than 5000 miles ago.

Spark plugs look good - not too black. Truck runs ok.
Down loaded the 2F emmisions manual and started through the checks - looks like the air injection valve may be bad. Air just pumps back into the air cleaner side. Catalyst temps are about 465 motor side, 530 exhaust side after a highway run. The air valve parts are no longer availible OEM. SOR has them used but pretty pricey for used.

Any ideas where to start? Any recommendations of a cruiser 2F emmisions mechanic in Tucson?

Thanks

Before replacing $$$$ parts, I would put it on a gas analyzer to tune it. Often simple tuning will make it pass. Don't know of any older rig, carb friendly type shops in Tucson. If none if the locals chime in, try a search like Tucson shops on this forum?

I have taken my 40 to Fletchers @ Oracle/Magee when it did not pass. Thet charged me $80.00 to tune it and they took it down to emissions themselves. This works for me as I am exteremely short on time!

They seem to like old cruisers in there as well, last time they were restoring a 74 Fj40 and seemed to know quite a bit about them.

Ramsowers Garage does good work.

If I don't do the work myself, the cruiser goes to Calypso Auto 326 5358. Dodge/Ft Lowell area.

Welcome to the forum!
