I can tell by the tick toc of my watch, oh wait make that my front end, that I'm due for a birf job sometime soon. I thought that I'd post up and see if we as a club wanted to get together sometime next month and wrench some of these knuckles apart.

Actually I need to do mine again soon and a.mus.ed needs to do his also. We're in Tucson though and a proper birf job is an ALL day job.

I still haven't gotten around to doing mine. Just found out yesterday the wife's truck needs a new engine. Seems I spend all my time wrenching on other rigs, and the 40 always gets knocked back to the end of the line.

I'm in the east valley and can fit 3 rigs or so in the driveway, I could host but don't really have the garage set up like a shop at this point. So we'd need to pool some tools. (in addtion to tarps) If we had some more space or a shop we could get the BBQ going and make a day of it and it probably would be a bit easier if we end up with "bunches o'trucks" Plus my beer will stay cold even without a 45qt Engel in the back ;-)

Probably not a good idea to drive to another town for a birf job. I've done 2 birf jobs and both were in the neighborhood of 10 hours each. Add 4-5 hours of drive time and thats a long dirty day.

What I mean is, I'd rather do my birfs at home so there is no hurry and I can always quit and finish the next day.

Tucson folks - need an opinon

Not having any prior experience with the LC's, would somebody mind taking some time the weekend to ride shotgun with me, and tell me if what I'm experiencing - noise level, vibrations is unusual, or the nature of the beast? Don't want to be panicky or anything like that, so having someone who can compare to a good running rig would be handy.

Then I'll know if I need to rebirf, or not.

1. When was the last service?
2. Are there big dripping leaks from the knuckles or more likely a large amount of nasty built up?
3. Clicking or clunking?
4. Or if you have a wobble at the front wheel it may mean bearings, which you may as well repak the brifs at the same time.

My noisy truck - part two

1. When was the last service?
At least 4 years ago. PO didn't do any maint that I'm aware of. Previous to that the owner was supposed to have been meticulous about care.
2. Are there big dripping leaks from the knuckles or more likely a large amount of nasty built up?
No major leaks, but haven't visually inspected all front end and drive shaft stuff, other than just casual eyeball when I was underneath replacing the fuel pump. Didn't see anything that to my untrained eye looked all that bad
3. Clicking or clunking?
Ticking? Thinking I may have a donut gasket leak, but can't tell the difference between all the various noises that I've seen described.
4. Or if you have a wobble at the front wheel it may mean bearings, which you may as well repak the brifs at the same time.

Not a wobble per se, but about 50 to 60 mph I get some serious sympathetic vibrations - thought it was engine or tranny, so tried drifting in neutral, but same results. Could also be wacky tires, but so many possibilities thats why I'm looking to take a 15 minute drive with someone who is more familiar with how these *should* sound.

What side of town are you on? I'll be in the driveway wrenching and drinking this weekend. I'm on the east side.

Same here, live just off the base in the GL and Kolb area. Planning to head up to Phoenix on Sunday, but should be around Saturday afternoon. If thats cool, send me a PM and we can set a time frame,

Grew up near there. Sending PM.

went ahead and replaced my trunnions this afternoon since i'm planning on a little dirt time this w/e.

Vibrations - probable cause

Went over to Alvins and Alvin and I went for a check ride. He noticed the vibration as well, about 45 mph. He crawls underneath and points out that the ujoint bolts aren't tight. He tights them up, greases the rear joint (the zerk for the front is in the wrong spot and inaccessible) and we air up the tires to 40psi.

World of freaking difference on the drive back. Gonna add new ujoints to my list of replacement bits, since no idea how long that had been going on. Goes to show you can't trust previous owners.

well I would totally show up for this, im kind of a rookie mechanic and would love to watch someone tear it all apart. I'd video tape it for sure so when the time comes for me to do it I have more reference

Do you think reviewing the birf DVD would help in putting an FJ40 disk brake conversion back together? It's been awhile since I removed everything.

BTW I'm thinking first or second week in Dec.

IIRC, I think CSC has the birf DVD in the club library. Check with Phil if you want to borrow it.

Didn't that get loaned out and never returned?? I thought I remember something about that a year or so ago...:meh:
