There are a few little oddities when rebuilding any engine, I'm going to try to list some of the 1FZ issues that have come to light as time permits me too. Hopefully some folks will find these useful and they will prevent a few helpless tools from being thrown. :D

Soooo you want to rebuild your 1FZ? Excellent... it's a great engine. 99.9% of the parts to rebuild it are readily available... with the exception of the oil pump drive gear bearing! No problem you say, the old one meets spec, I'll just leave it in the block and move on. Well, with every proper rebuild a hot tanking of the block is a must, and twice is even better. Hot tank soloution eats up yummy little bearings, so they need to be removed. The problem lies in that the oil pump bearing is pressed into a space that dosn't readily allow many types of pullers to be used. Using a destructive type of method leaves you w/o a bearing... so what to do.

Well here is a soloution... it's not all that uncommon of a way to remove a bearing race or what have you. A long bolt with nut, a 36mm socket, a couple of washers for stacking, one being brass (I'll post the size up in next few days) so as not to mar the bearing you are R&Ring. These piece will allow the bearing to be extracted out the front of the block.

PIc 1, Bolt with washers snuck up behind the bearing and pulled through.

Socket and nut placed on to bolt, ready to pull.

Turn the nut and the bearing pops out like butta!

Keep this one in the back of your head, it will save you major time and prevent headaches. Thanks to Cdan for pointing out that the bearing is only available installed in a new $1000 block from Toyota.

EXCELENT!

You have no idea how bad it hurts me to have to tell somebody that they just bought a new block.

It's a lot more than a thousand bucks too.....

Brian, while you have the bearing out you might measure it and publish the specs, so that in the future a person in need could more easily have one machined.

Dan, how much? :D

Rich, I have a machined bearing in hand. I'll get the specs and post them. It was done in case removal of the stocker did not "work out".... and it didn't, for the first one.

The machine shop has a driver set that will put it back in place... I'll probably just use the brass washer on the front side and press it back in. First though, off to Swaintech for a moly coating.
