Full time rig with 5.29/ 35's daily driven 10-12k a year, opinions wanted on gun drilled greaseable Cromo outers ( Longfeild or Nitro ) to increase longevity ( keep them from clicking )

I did mine 6 months back and the clicking stopped. Had +- 350K or the rig.

However, I cannot honestly say that having the extra grease nipple made them stop clicking since I also swapped birfs from one side to another. I do feel better knowing that when I hit them with the grease gun, the grease goes DIRECTLY into the birf cage.

Opinions differ greatly on this one.

Where did you get this done? I have wanted to do this next time it's down.

x2 - Jonathan, did you find a shop here in the Bay Area, or did you ship yours off to Florida?

Also, it looks like TrickyT (Tom) was trying to find a shop here too. All info appreciated.

This mod is kind of pointless on a part time rig since the birfs aren't turning anyway.

This would be a good mod on a full time rig.

I think it is kind of pointless to upgrade the strength via chromoly only to weaken it by drilling a zirk hole so it won't make any noise.

I'd rather have a stock birf for free.

I got a couple in the mail a few months back....

Free.

:grinpimp:

Now yer talkin'. Mine are only free 'cause they are already on my rig :grinpimp:

I used the place in Florida that I was pointed to by another Mudder. Can get details if anyone needs them. Was about $100 in all plus shipping.

That reminds me, when are you coming to see me... speaking of part time ?

Didn't know I was going 'part time' when I did the mod but now the grease will really last a long time !

Smarty pants me !;)

The po put a set of "mine" birfs in my rig and its been doing great. Its so freaking easy to grease too, no guessing or measuring with zip ties, just pop the dust shield and pump. Just did em the other day and it literally took like 7 minutes to do both sides.

Nothng wrong with dumping grease in the fill hole at all, actually its probably easier getting under the van, undoing the cap, dumping the grease in, wondering if you got enough in there, measuring with a zip tie, getting all greasy.... using a grease gun on a fitting is way more complex....

Dont want to start another debate but if they hold up under ground and are easier to grease theyre ok by me.

i had one of mine done by a machine shop next door to my dad's work whilst i had it out to change the bearing and mar-tack the shaft. I supplied a long drill bit, a grease nipple and a crate of beer and they came back done. Makes things a bit cleaner for filling with grease and it goes straight where you want it.

I'll get the other one done at some stage, but its still an original toyota one and it doesn't click yet. The one i had drilled was an an aftermarket job.

not an essential modification by any means, but if you can get it done for a good price, then its worthwhile.

IMHO, OEM birfs are better for a street rig. I have done a lot to my rig to make it perform better offroad but I recently replaced my birfs with OEM birfs. My reasoning is that I did a lot of wheeling with my stock birfs and they lasted 220K before needed to replace one. Pretty good batting average.

I clearly understand the advantage the chromaly birfs offer - considerbly stronger for offroading but I felt long life was more important since my rig is still a daily driver.

Unless you are wheeln the snot out of it on a regular basis cromoly birfs are a waste of money especially if you will put 10k+ a year on the truck
Grease port or not the cromoly will still wear out faster
You need to stick with OEM birfs they are plenty strong and will last another 100k while the cromoly will be done well before that
