Here's an easy one, I think....

Insulation under hood starting to sag. Is it really needed?

Had the hood repainted a few years ago due to fading and what appeared to be oxidation of clear coat and paint. Don't want to have to do it again.

Anyone else remove the insulation under the hood?

My guess is that the Toyota engineers put it there for a reason.

Now is that reason to suppress and engine fire? sound dampening? or to protect the hood paint from too much heat?

The last thread on this topic seemed inconclusive

This subject has been kicked around before here on MUD. A search might link you to some posts with more info.

I wonder if Dan has replacement insulation?

The hood insulator is still available. It lists for around $140. The clips are about $8 for all 12

great .. that is the info I wanted to here. OEM all the way!

The latter two for sure.

Problematic to ship however. You can't fold it and it's close to the size of the hood so dimensional weight makes it bloody expensive to ship out event though it weighs practically nothing.

X2,
I picked mine up at a local Toyota dealer here in Denver when they had a promo for 20% off any one part. First one they ordered in was damaged during transport, second one was good.

Just so you know, here in Venezuela we had two trim levels for the 80, the high end "VX" and the base "Autana", both were basically the same except for options that the VX came with such as the center console fridge, better seats, digital A/C, etc. they both had the same engine. The VX came with the hood liner, the Autana didn't, my guess is that it's there for aesthetic and sound proofing reasons.

The 70 series also came with the 1FZFE and it didn't have the insulator either.
