As my Cruiser is getting older I have something else starting to go now, yep the paint on my hood. I'm really surprised, for the most part I've always gotten plenty of compliments on the condition of the paint on my vehicle. Most thought my truck was newer that it is. I'm a little surprised with the hood though. I've never had an over heating problem according to the idiot gauge and I always make sure the coolant level is were it is supposed to be. I guess the 247,000 plus miles is starting to take it's toll.

Id say 80% of the 80's out there have the same condition some place on the truck. Mine has it everywhere, thanks sunny SOCAL.

Not nearly as bad as mine. It seems this kind of damage is worst on green. I plan to paint mine with bedliner

X2, here in colorado, most of the 80's I see with faded hood paint are all the dark green or other dark colors.

Paint the center of the hood satin black?

I did exactly that and the oxidation cloud has now spread to the edges of the hood. My boys were counting 80's over Labor Day weekend as we were on the freeway quite a bit, and every dark one we saw had oxidized paint. I'm lining the whole shebang with Al's, just waiting for the time to do it...soon.

Mine looks worse than that on the hood. It's Medium Red Pearl (Maroon).

Ive got my roof like that, but times a million bazillion !

Consider a vinyl wrap or repaint, or leave as is. In my case, roof rack over it and I'm good.

Maybe you should tackle it as a DIY. Just sand & repaint. If it comes out crappy, its a learning experience and then have someone else do it, or keep trying till you figure it out. You can't mess it up beyound the "repair" it already needs unless you go crazy with the sander.....

Mine's going too. A couple of coats of wax and it looks ok for a month or two. I'll need a more permanent solution before long. I've had decent luck with reapplying clear coat but I don't know of it will work on a horizontal surface. Prolly have to go with black.

Same thing happened to mine ...

I had the same problem. One trip to Maaco and $500 later and my truck looks new. Here are some before and after pics.

WOW, sorry to hear it's a common problem. I was thinking of just getting the hood painted but I climbed up to check out my roof and yup just a small spot but the clear coat is starting to fail there too. I'm off road a lot especially with deer season coming up. I'll have to re-evaluate after hunting season. Thanks for all the replies.

Mine was like that when I bought it. I got really motivated one day to bedline it and it looks waaay better than that custom faded look. I used 7 cans of spray Duplicolor bedliner after I sanded the whole thing removed from the body.

Mine is green and was doing the same on the hood. It started small and then within one summer was huge! I painted the center but now it has started on the edges of the hood and the roof!! I guess I will have it painted soon.

Happened to my daughter's, problem was solved repainting the beast with polyurethane paint. Mine is white and poly painted also.

I saw you on 183 the other night, I was on the yellow Ducati. Nice truck, it looks tall and thin with those tires, are those your Street setup?

I only have this set up. It works well for DD and for trips to the State Parks, etc. My wheeling is mellow by 'Mud standards, but I have taken the truck to places that I could not go with my F250 or Excursion (both sold now). I got it because I was tired of getting stuck.
