Not quite a trip to the beauty parlor

My hood was starting to look like hell. Lots of white streaks and spots and it was starting to detreriorate very quickly. Upon wiping it with some wax and grease remover, I noticed that the color was still there and is was just the clear coat fading. I went to NAPA, purchased a $30 can of automotive Clear Coat, removed the hood, wet sanded with 600 grit, buffed the hood and applied the clear coat. The total time involved was about 3 hours and $30 in materials + $10 for the neighbor kids help. I think it looks 100 times better now :)

Very nice! Now just keep a coat of wax (I will let you decide the brand) on there.

Nice work!

 Riley

can you post the info on the clear coat?

brand?
is it only available at Napa's?

awesome....I need that in a big way!
and the roof too!

I usually use a 3 part mixture that is a little higher end. They were out of it, but the paint guy said that some guy who paints hotrods uses this stuff and gets really good results.

I also recommend the Collinite 845 Insulator Wax. It's probably the longest lasting carnauba wax that you'll find. Literally lasts for about 4-5 months on my truck, which sits outside. Use it over a synthetic paint sealant (such as Klasse All-in-One or similar), and you'll have great protection on that hood. You can also find Collinite 845 at Advance Auto in the boat supply section. Not all Advance stores have a boat supply section. Call ahead and ask if they carry part#845.

nice paint job on the hood.

Looks good, anymore pics at different angles?
I need to do the same. my hood is turning whiteish (spelling?)
I have a couple of questions.
Have you painted before? Looks like you painted in the garage.
How large of compressor and spray gun.
What was the dry time? (can't keep the wifes car out side too long).
For thirty-plus dollars I think I will try this myself.

Would this work for an oxidation spot about the size of a grapefruit? I'm not looking for the paint to be new, I just have a spot that's graying on the roof right behind the sunroof. I'm worried about rust in the next couple years.

Yes I have painted before. Spraying Clear coat is a no brainer though. Just start out light, and increase fluid volume as needed. Try painting a trash can or something before doing your hood.

I have a 20 Gallon compressor, I used a $30 hvlp gun. My binks guns all need rebuilt.

Dry time between coats, 10 minutes. Total dry time is about 1 hour, let cure for about 4 hours before handling

If there is no rust and the color is good when it is wet, this should be OK

I'd like to see it on the rig. Does the new clear coat clash with the rest of the vehicle?

Attached is a picture of the hood baking in the sun in front of the cruiser, and another after it has been rained on for a few days. The hood does not stand out, the shine matches and the color matches.

I forgot to add, before painting, Wash hood thoroughly with Dawn Blue Dish detergent, LIGHTLY wet sand (I used mineral spirits) with 600 to etch, and pick up a can of Econo Prep at Napa. This is a wax and grease remover and can be used for you final tac with a clean cotton lint free cloth. Finally blow it off with an air gun. Cleanliness is is a must for painting. If there is dust on it, or residual grease or wax, it is going to look like hell. Before proceeding, you may want to visit the Paint and Body forum and get some tips form people that know more than me. Finally, if your application isn't perfect, you can probably take it to a detailer for a good buffing.

That looks great! You did a really nice job! Congrats on a great fix for little $$$. Thanks for the write up, too!
