FJ62 winch bumper build

well...x-mas has come and gone for everybody and im finally just getting around to posting up some pics of my dads x-mas gift from me and my brother in law...both of us are welders so we decided to build something for my dads 60...kinda decided on a winch bumper, i picked up a plasma cutter for cheap off of a buddy and this was my first project with it so that was something else i was pretty stoked about. anyways...here it is, designed to fit a warn 8274 that my mom picked up used with this in mind.so enough bs...here are some pics!

the truck before me and tyler took it away. a beauty clean straight FJ62, 2.5" OME lift and over 500k on the clock but still runs like a champ!

started by making a 1:1 template out of cardboard wanted to try and keep everything as tight and close as we could while using the 8274

thought that didnt look right so....got the exacto knife out again and made some changes and this is what we came up with in the end

now to start cutting. picked up a full sheet of 1/4 plate for this bumper...used about half of it and this thing is bulletproof, just the way i like it (and the way dad needs it :steer:)
here is a pic of the blank

well seeing as we lacked the equipment and the funds to bend everything...we just cut most of the way and bent by hand...welded up the seams after

once everything is all bent up and tacked...we're ready to weld 'er up
DSC04356-1.jpg

got it all welded up and me and dad sat it on the frame horns just for a quick mock up

the finished product once we had finished all the fab...all thats gotta be done is to shoot it with some primer and a top coat of semi gloss black "THINK FAST HIPPIE"
IMGP3400.jpg

dad just shooting on the primer, will get pics of the finished bumper without the winch mounted tomorrow...

...who knew that damn marker would show up through the paint :meh:
and just a pic of me playing with my new toy..the plasma cutter
DSC04363-1.jpg

cant imagine how much more this would have cost if we had cut it all out with my oxy fuel torch or the time it would have taken...defanitly worth every penny i paid for it

anyways....no pics of the tube as it was fabbed up....that was mostly done in the dark with just kinda crappy lighting with dad looking over my shoulder because the bumper wasnt finished by x-mas so we decided to give him the template and keep on working.

hope you guys like it!

Looks great Guy

500 k on the truck? Still original engine and tranny?

far as we know its all still original running gear, all we have done to the motor was ajust the valves

Looks pretty nice, good job.

nice nice .. and fast ! any idea on how much it weights . ?

Nice work, guys!

What does it weigh? I'm guessing 110#.

Im thinking it weighs right in around 100# you can handle it yourself but its a bit of a bear....pretty easy to just have one person holding it while the 2nd puts the bolts into the frame though

Tapage: this was a very quick build....start to finish in about a week....so ya, thats how i spent my x-mas holidays lol

well here are what the finished product looks like, im going to be re-assembling the winch tomorrow and putting that on. i just got finished sand blasting the casing ect ect

also...with the weight, i was thinking this bumper would be stupid heavy because it is ALL 1/4 plate...but its really not that bad to be honest, not nearly as bad as i feared it would be

got some of the finished bumper pics from the brother in law cause i didnt get a chance to take any

so there is the end result...there are a few small things i would change if i did another but...overall im pretty happy with this bumper...

junkie-ya i have been toying with the idea of a rear bumper/tire carrier something for a little while also and have yet to figure out a design in my head that i like....i really like the look of a rear stinger tire carrier just because it makes the spare easier to get to and work with...but i have just seen them done on 40 series trucks, will keep thinking on it...still have the better part of a 1/4 steel sheet so i can play with that. just need a good idea of what im doing in my head before i go ripping off the rear bumper cause...if i do that i gotta make something work. so long and short....i dunno yet when i will start working on a rear bumper for this truck

looks great!

Beautiful! Looking for ideas for my upcoming 8274, would be great to work out something like this.
I just have to drop the stinger, as the police here would give me a neckshot. i just have to fab some protection for the 8274.

hey tlc norway if you need any pics or info about this one just let me know. good luck with your build!

got the winch all cleaned up today...she's looken pretty good shot a clear coat on all the aluminum and black on the brake parts ect so she's all dressed up just have to put 'er all back together on monday and get it on the truck

great work!! love the bumper

Sweet lookin bumper. and I see your in BC. So I'm assuming the 500k is kilometers?

yup, that 500k is km, but still...but i still think thats doing pretty alright. starting to talk about a rear bumper with the old man now....dont know when it will get started or finished tho

Looks good. A guy at work is talking about buying an ARB bumper for his taco, too bad your back at school. You could build him one if you were around.
