I have had one long term issue on my 62. When it is hot out and/or I am going slow either off road or in traffic "somtimes" the motor will start chugging, RPM flash up and down and this just gets worse until it dies. It never sends out any codes for this when it happens. Over the past few years I have replaced every part of the EFI and tested it all. The problem is only at low speed when it is hot. Some of my PICs from Colorado show the truck minus hood; that was due to this issue.
I had about decided that it was a fuel boiling issue and planned to insulate all fuel lines but now that it has cooled down a bit I decided to wait a while.
One big problem with this issue is that I could not get it to happen where I could really troubleshoot it. I was always fixing what I thought may be an issue then had to wait until is started chugging again.
Last night it was cool and raining. It began to do it; worse than ever. Today it was a bit warmer and it started doing it again. It has never done it at these temps before. Got it to the shop and I could get it to replicate.
I would let it heat up at idle then lift the hood once it began to chug. I sprayed water on each part of the EFI in turn to see if it got better if the part, TPS for instance, cooled down. No good. Ran the codes again and saw a code 14. First time ever. Code 14 is an issue with the coil or ignighter.
Once it began to chug again I sprayed down the ignightor with water and it got better quickly. Replaced the coil and ignightor and no problem!
This was a slowly evolving issue that just gave up towards the end. Usually ignightors either work or dont. Never seen one do this.
So, like the FSM said, EFI issues are generally other stuff that infulences the EFI as opposed to the EFI itself.
