I need to repair the oil pan on my truck...

I manage to crack the pan while catching some air and SnT....

And yes I was warned about this maybe happening...

This means I have to pull it off and have it replace for that of a camaro and or have the damage oil pan trimmed and welded back together....

Can the oil pan be pulled out from under the rig without having to pull the tranny out ?....

I see two bolts that I need to take off from under the tranny/oil pan...

Any + info is well appreciated...

Here are some pics of the McGaiver repair I did to make it back home...

JB weld and Duct tape are my friends....

I got home and pulled the oil out fixed my steering pump and will try to figure out whats up with my front axle.....:mad:

Frank,

Sorry to hear that! I used a f-body oil pan. I got it from gm parts direct for around $170. The gm part number is 12558762. Check it out on gmpartsdirect.com Also , you might want to try RanchoRecycling.com they are a good source for used gm parts in Cali. Obviously the camaro f body pan will give you more clearance. It's been awhile since I replaced mine but I do remember doing it with everything in and not pulling anything out. I have a chilton book for same year GM trucks. I would be happy to email copies on the disassembly process. Let me know if it's needed.

good luck,
Merrick

Given that those oil pans are die castings they can have a lot of internal stresses in them. If you brought that pan to me for welding I would want a block to bolt it to before doing any welding on it. Some of the GM info that I've found says that they are a significant part of the block's lower end strength, unlike the older engines with their stamped steel oil pans. That means that fit-up is more critical than it is with a stamped pan and die castings are easy to warp when welding on them. I will go so far as to say that anyone who offers to weld it w/o a block to bolt it to either knows a hell of a lot more than I, or hasn't a bloody clue.

If the F-car pan holds the same amount of oil it would be a no-brainer for me.

Hey Frank, I'm going to try to pull the oil pan out this morning. I'll let you know what you need to do in an hour or so.

(I also bought the F-body oil pan and I'm going to install it today as well. From what I've heard, you need a few parts to complete the oil pan swap.)

Do you want my original oil pan? You could borrow it until your parts come in. If you cover the shipping, I can send it today. Or if you know anyone in San Diego area that can come pick it up...

What happened to your power steering pump?

Thanks for all the replies guys... really appreciate the feed back...
I did not know about the F-oil pan option... got any pics of that ??

Thanks for the parts...

I really like to do the camaro for more clearance but yeah the no-brainer is more appealing right now.......

Dylan thanks for the offer... I dont think it would be worth it to do the job twice.. I rather let her sit until I decide what's the best option...
Thank you tho'... also if you got a pic of that F-oil pan.... I love to see how it seats on relation to the axle...

I guess welding is not an option then... I will get one of the two pans and go with that and will see if anybody can weld the old oil pan just for kickss......

Dylan this whole mess started when I put my front end about two feet up in the air while (so Im told) at SnT....going up on one of the sand dunes. Did it twice and the second time (its my guessing) it pushed the engine to the DS and smacked the power sterring pump against the power steering box, messed the oil pan and I think I may have broken birdfield... (whoo hoo...:bang::bang: )

BTW SnT was awesome and meeting a lot of the folks that post here was waaay cool....!!!

PS. I will pull that sucker some time today...

Looking at the F-body oil pan.. I see it says for camaros.. are we talking about the same part here ?

It sure looks like it to me...

F body is the camaro.

Dynosoar:zilla:

Ok so for you guys that did the oil pan swap did you also get the Oil pump pickup: 12558251,
Windage tray: 12558253, Dipstick tube: 12551577, Dipstick: 12551581 and O-ring for Oil pump pickup: 12557752 ??

Or did yah just do the pan and all is good in life ???

Do tell.....

Yep, those were the other parts I was talking about. You will probably need all of those parts including the oil pan. From gmpartsdirect, it was about $300 total, I think.

I just found out that the oil pan I bought 2 weeks ago from gmpartsdirect has a crack in it. I've got to send it back to get a new one. At least I'm still knee deep in wiring up my truck and don't need the oil pan right away...

I knew that the Vortec oil pan was too close for comfort to the front diff. Hopefully you didn't damage too much stuff.

Let me know if you need anything...

Frank,

It's been awhile but according to my receipts the only parts I picked up was 012557752 seal,12558251 screen and 012558762 pan. Here is a pic of mine.

later,
Merrick

Thanks Dylan... I'll let yah know... where the pics for your swap??

Merrick.. you have got a clean looking truck eh...

Looking at the last two pics.. I notice you dont have the two lower screws on the tranny to the oil pan and what about that drive shaft ?? Is that stock and has been made longer to fit or was another modification done to it...
,
That oil pan seats nice and hi !!!

Thanks guys, you rock !!!

Ha Ha, my project's all under wraps Frankie my boy...It's a secret!

Nah, I'm documenting the crap out of my V8 swap and I hope to put together a little manual to help others wanting to do the same thing. It's just that I'm slower than a turtle trying to get this thing done...

yeah, you gotta take those two bolts off to drop the pan. they are back on now it's an older pic. the drive shaft gut made it for me to give me more clearance. He said it was a jeep drive shaft and claims that it's bullet proof. Haven't had time to test it out. Still fighting o2 sensor codes.

Hey guys.. got my parts today...
Im going to see if I can install them this week....

Not knowing what I need to swap I ordered all 5? items and see as to how or what needs to be changed/replaced.

Any of you know if all the parts needed to be swap/changed ?

bummer dude, I always wondered how folks squeezed these motors in t hese trucks with enough space for the DS. I kinda hit mine in moab on one of the long straights in the desert. ended up moving my motor up an inch. I think this f body pan may be the ticket.
shoulda done it the first time.

got her done today but dont know what oil filter goes on that new pan :bang::bang:

lots of clearance now.

Chino Cochino... thanks for the info on the torque and bolt sequence.. it made it a lot easier.....

I hope it does not leak now :hillbilly::hillbilly:

Cool man! I knew you wouldn't be able to wait...

While in Vegas I kept thinking to myself..."I wish I were at home so I could work on my truck"...I've got it bad....I need help.

So are you done or do you still have to find out what filter goes on there? Let me know if you need a hand.
