I need some help from wheel experts.

I put 15x8 aluminum wheels with 33x1250’s on my FJ62. The wheels have a thick mounting section, like aluminum wheels usually do, which results in less thread length on the lug stud being engaged by the lug nuts. (The lug holes on the wheels have the tapered seat for the lug nuts, and the supplied lug nuts are all tapered, too.) But I am concerned that the lug studs are too short. It looks like I am engaging only about 6 to 8 full thread turns of each stud with the lug nuts.

Question 1: Have any Mudders installing aluminum wheels on their 60-series wagons changed the stock wheel studs to longer studs?

Question 2: Should I go to the lug nut type that has not only a taper section, but also an extended part that reaches farther in, to engage more threads?

Thanks in advance for your opinions, thoughts, and advice.

I would take a stock stud to Napa or some other parts warehouse and look for some studs in their bins that have the same diameter shoulder, or very slightly larger that are of course longer. Then install those studs into your truck.

Or go with some steel wheels...

Lug Nuts 101

All: I ended up replacing the lug nuts.

On the left is the type of lug nut that came with the wheels. These are the ones that I felt had too few threads engaging the studs.

Next to it is the type I ended up using. Note the extended straight section. I feel better with these. They hold on with more thread turns.

Both of these are "bulge" type.

Continuing, the next two lug nuts in the picture are non "bulge" type, that I considered using, but did not.

I got the replacements from www.prestigewheel.com

The prestigewheel website has great illustrations of their products, with dimensions to make it clear what they are offering.

So what I found out when I put aftermarket lug nut on, is that the nut used a different sized socket (smaller) than the original. No big deal when I'm in the garage, but it took me a while to realize that the OEM lug nut wrench in the bag under the front seat wouldn't work any more. That would really suck if I were out and about someplace and needed to take my wheel off. I went back to OEM lug nuts. You can throw a properly sized socket/lug nut wrench in your tool bag.

Good point! Yeesh, this kind of got right past me.

I never checked that factory tool bag lug wrench. I have a four-ended cross-bar type lug wrench that lives in the back of my Cruiser. I use that thing. Now that you point it out, I realize that my after-market lug nuts are a different size from the stock ones.

You happen to have a p/n on those, Rigger? I've got a '63 FJ45 that I've got 1/4" spacers up front and alloys... and I just noticed that there's not much engagement on those standard nuts I'm running. Maybe 3 turns, tops.

Love the wheels but not enough to trade safety for 'em and nuts would be a little simpler that pressing in longer studs. Also; what does "bulge type" mean?

Sorry, I don't think I have a part number. I'll dig thru my receipts and see.

The bulge type have the bulged out area at the end of the lug. That terminology is from the prestige web site.

Good luck!

EDIT: The part number is 5395 for the ones I used; second from left in the photo.

Perfect. Thanks !

bumping your thread .

did you have to enlarge the hole in your wheel to get the new lug nut to pass through the wheel

i would like to change the lugs on my rig also for more engagement of the threads for my aluminum wheels :grinpimp:

I did not have to enlarge the holes. They bolted right up. :)

Going to bump this thread. I am in the same spot you were in with aftermarket wheels. Just ordered online just waiting for them to call me to set up payment. My rig is a 1984 fj60.
