Anyone have pics of a custom fan shroud for a V8 conversion?

Since I did my 6.2 diesel conversion I ve used an electric cooling fan, but I don't like the fact that the motor could possibly burn out and leave me stranded.

Therefore, I bought and installed a flex fan. the only problem is that the stock shroud is not aligned with the fan.

Does anyone have pics of their custom fan shroud that they use on their V8 cruisers?

how do you like the 6.2 diesel? hows the power, towing and gas milage

I like the diesel a lot but I have not towed with it yet.

I like the power especially when my IP was turned up, the only bad thing is it smoked like crazy so I had to turn down the fuel.

My mileage is somewhere around 14-18 mpg.

Don't have any of mine here at work. If I can remember tomorrow, I'll post one before I leave for work.

Thanks philos1, pics would be greatly appreciated.

make a cardboard template and find a metal fab shop to roll it up out of .8mm galv sheet. Problem solved... just my .02 AUD cents! baaaahahahahahahahaha

Forgot to take a pic of mine today (spent it helping Manuchao on his Vortec swap). I'll try to get it in the AM.

BTW, MutleyFJ62 cardboard is a great idea but I thought you guys stopped using pennies??? :D

Thats okay, saw the pics and looks like Manuchao s ride is almost ready to get some speeding tickets. :D

I modified the original shroud since the engine isn't perfectly in line with old engine, the fan wasn't centered in the shroud. On the right side of the shroud, cut the opening out an inch and added a lip with a 1/8 piece of metal. On the left side added some metal to fill in the gap. At the bottom also had to cut the shroud and add in a two inch piece of metal to make the opening a little bigger for the larger dia fan.
The first pic the shroud is upside down.

Thanks everyone for the pics and advice. :)

My dad ended up making me one out of fiberglass, and it seems to work pretty well.

I almost forgot, it cost around $23 for resin and for the foam my dad shaped to make the mold. Luckily we had a lot of fiberglass cloth around from surfboard ding repairs to complete the job and he even added some resin tint just for the hell of it. I know its kind of lame but now my shroud matches my batteries. Hope you guys like it.

fan shroud

That really looks great, you could market those. I bet a lot of people would like them.

Thanks Jimmy, I'll be sure to let my dad know. He could have made it look cleaner but he ran out of resin for a final smooth coat.

How do you like the flex fan? I am finishing up my 6.2 FZJ80 swap. Turns out I didn't place the engine quite far enough back in the engine compartment so there is no room for a fan clutch. I am considering a flex fan or electric but think the flex fan would move more air. What are your experiences with both? Have you noticed any loss of power with the flex fan, or mileage? What size flex fan did you go with?

I just noticed you mentioned the fuel being turned up, was it like this when you got it? I have a military 6.2 as well and just wondering if I am going to have to adjust mine? I have only started it a few times today and at first it didn't seem to smoke much but it seems to be smoking more the more I start it?

First of all, Congratulations!:steer:

But back to buisness, I installed a 17" Flex-a-lite flex fan with a 2" spacer. I still have around 4" of clearance from my radiator to the fan. I'm pretty sure it will fit your scenario and it does move quite a bit of air, much more than the twin 12"electric Flex-a-lite fans I had on earlier. Another thing is that a good electric fan usually runs around $250 and up unless you grab one from a Taurus. The flex fan, spacer, and metric bolts from the hardware store ran about $80 and you don't have to worry about your electric fan motor burning out when your in the middle of nowhere.

Well, I just installed it this morning and drove it around for a bit and didnt notice any loss of power. The flex fan weighs only a fraction of the original fans weight so I believe that it shouldnt affect the mileage that much.

I junked the IP that originally came with my engine because it was running away after startup. After that I bought a reman IP online and my truck was smoking like a Greatful Dead concert at idle. I then took it to a diesel injection guy in the area, after testing it he told me it was a POS. I returned that IP and bought a pump from the mechanics friend, threw it in and my engine ran great. The only problem is that he runs a turbo and that requires the fuel to be turned up in the IP. So that is why my pump had the fuel turned up originally.

BTW, what color is the smoke coming out and is it constant?

Hopefully I won't go through the same problems with my IP, it seems to idle ok now. Smoke wise I really can't tell, it is black and probably seems like alot more than it is because it is running in a closed shop! Too cold this week to open the door, plus it has only run about 2 minutes total. I am going to go the flex fan route, I looked at one yesterday at O'Reileys auto parts and it said not for engines larger than 4 liters? It was an 18" flex fan so I decided not to buy it. I don't know why it said that but I am going to shop around a bit today. By the way, your shroud looks great! Wish my fiberglass skills were that good. Thanks for the advice, will let you know when it is on the road.
