Sorry if this is not the right forum for this but...

I have a 78 FJ40 that I might have to sell in the not too distant future due to job security concerns. She is a V8 conversion but is very clean, straight, and rust free outside of that. There are a couple after market gages (temp, pressure, RPM). She has the jump seats. Also have lock boxes that can go in place of either, none, or both jump seats. Only negatives I can think of are ugly headliner area (thinking about lightly sanding and painting white to match top if I keep it), and some steering slop. Gas tank looks new.

Got her for a song from family members so no idea of what she would be worth and how the conversion effects pricing (negative a bit i'm sure but how much I don't know).

If more info is needed, let me know.

I see Cruisers that LOOK similar go anywhere from $8000 to $20000 but that's a heck of a range! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Phil

underneath, under the hood, and more inside to get a better idea.. it looks really nice though..

i'm afraid to say a price but if i had endless amounts of money that truck would be worth 5-10k to me depending on the above pictures and how mechanically sound the vehicle is.

(i say 5k because if it runs like s*** and/or the frame's rotted out then that drops the price significantly in my book)

ive seen them sell for quite a bit but not usually on the east coast, occasionaly they will bring a good buck but not usually on this coast .start it at 10,000 and see if you get any offers or google landcruisers for sale and you will get a better idea.

x3 on a few more pics. But if the rest looks as good as this, it definitely looks like a double digit rig to me. I would take the effort to find an inexpensive headliner/grey carpet, pull the top, and install before taking the for sale pics. Unfortunately I am pretty fond of the 2F so that would drop the price for me. But I would still think, depending on the other pics and quality of conversion your looking at a $12,000 - $14,000 price. Ebay is a great place to get more than it's worth.

Additional pics needed as well as mileage on the rig and the motor. Also, is that the original paint as that would make a difference as well, cuz that is a clean looking rig.

I bought a very clean, rust-free, chevy converted 40 for $7.5K. I knew it needed some things, but I have put $4k into it and it doesn't look as good as yours. just a data point.

If it is worthy of being a DD and the frame looks as good as the body, you easily have a $10-12k truck.

You will probably get the best price on ebay if you are willing to help with shipping, help meaning be available for the shipper to load. List it with the starting price at what you want and see what happens. People willing to pay 10k up usually do not ming an extra $500 or so to ship it. You can also check the completed listings on ebay and see what the others actually got bid up to, that is often a good gauge.

The best way to sell these Cruisers (provided it's as clean throughout the truck as it appears on the few pictures you posted) is to take it to a consignment TLC specialist. I've put endless money in mine and fortunately I live within an hours drive from TLC Cruisers in Van Nuys(Los Angeles). I had mine appraised(at TLC) and I was told if I ever decide to sell it that he would be able to fetch somewhere in the neighborhood of 23-25k.(That's with the TBI V8 conversion) I'd be lucky to get 12k on CL!! The reason being is that TLC restored Cruisers go for 35K to 50K and up. They told me they have customers really interested in their restored Cruisers but aren't to trilled about dropping that kind of bank on a Cruiser. Suddenly they will see a Cruiser (such as yours) that "looks" as clean for considerably less. I don't know how the market is in VA however in LA things are a little different as are the buyers.

I haven't shopped around, but cruisercorps.com has headliners for $120 that look factory. They are sewn in the corners to match the radius of the top, have a thin foam backing and should go up with only some spray adhesive. For a rig as clean as yours I'd think it would be a wise investment, especially if you end up selling.

If I had a rig as nice as yours to sell, I'd fix the headliner before listing it. People often think if it was an easy fix, why hasn't it been done. They then start looking for other things that could be wrong or might be wrong and there enthusiasm wains.

Nice Mustard 40...

The price will reflect what the market will bear.

Yeah, that is why we call it EGOBay ;), they sell anywhere from 40 to 80% more than most other listings...

If you are a seller isn't that what you want? If I can get 40 to 80% more on an item I am selling that is where I am selling it. For the ones that are not restored you can sometimes snag a good deal also if you are close to them.

More info

Thanks everyone for the input so far. For $120 or so, it may have to end up with a headliner. I will enjoy it or it may help the selling. It does take away from the otherwise clean look.

I took a few more pictures. The underside of the cruiser has minor surface rust but that's about it. The frame is very solid. I found the installation book for the V8 conversion kit and it is a Hurst conversion. The V8 in it is a dual bolt main motor. I know because I put a rear main seal in it recently. I had an oil leak I fixed recently which ended up being an intake manifold gasket. That has been fixed. The passenger seat is out at the moment as I had not put it back in yet since trying to get the fuel gage more accurate and replacing some vent hoses. The seats are nice with no rips. There is a marine radio in the glove box (I guess in case it gets wet in there). The floor mat in the back is carpet but I believe I have the original one rolled up (but the carpet is nice). The floor under the carpet mat is perfect, nothing hiding under there. The Milage is around 65k. The do believe the paint to be original with the exception of front passenger fender and back to the door. I believe I was told it was a deer attack. The Landcruiser emblem is missing on that side. The paint matches very well and is hard to tell it is a repaint. That's all I can think of at the moment.

More input with the latest pics and update would be great!

P.S. Thanks to those that PM'd me about the cruiser and I will respond in a day or two. Busy weekend here!

Thanks again!

We all talk about a V8 conversion not being worth as much as a stock drivetrain but in reality, the most expensive FJ40 that money can buy has a V8.

after those pics i'm going to refine my original price range to 10-15K or maybe even more who knows - as stated above ebay could bring in the most $$ depending on what its worth to someone

x2 on getting a headliner b4 you sell it

If that's 65k not 165k that's a real plus.

I'd also invest a few dollars in some wire loom to tidy up the wiring under the hood. If everything is in order, you'll be able to fetch top dollar.

I've not heard of a "Hurst conversion"... For marketing, show pictures of the bell housing, motor mounts, and rust prone corners of frame/body.
