Who is running one on either transmission?

Did you install a spacer between the tcase input gear, and the rear bearing of the transmission?

How thick is your adapter plate, and where did you purchase it from?

What are you using to retain the tcase input gear on the output shaft of the transmission?

Pics would be great if you have them.

Thanks!

Sm465/Woody's adapter (3/4" thick)

No spacer (yet) ;)

Extreme Bends sm420 plate - 3/4" thick IIRC. No spacer - I guess I don't understand why it would be necessary? Retained exactly like the 'tech links' write-up with a big bolt locked by a bent washer retained by a roll pin engaged in the input gear's splines.

Don't even have the rear bearing in anymore. The GM trannys have a shorter shaft , I guess because they ran the PTO's off thr tranny ? I did have to drill and tap the washer and put a cap head screw in it. The input gear came off the first time when I didn't. Got the idea from a pic Pin Head posted.

Some plate adapters have a bearing in them, some don't. The ones that I have used, do not, and the gear will not stay in place on the tranny output shaft, unless the spacer is there to tighten the gear and washer/lock plate and bolt against. If this spacer is not used, the gear will walk inward on the output shaft...

Did you remove that retaining bolt last night Mike?

In that pic, it has red locktite on it.....

just wondering.

All sm420 plates I have seen (Warden's, Extreme bends, Spaceghost) use a bearing in the plate and use a washer (Toyota # 90201-35070; #25 on the SOR diagram) as a spacer between the two bearings.

Just that thrust washer eh?

If their plate adapter has a bearing in it, then you would not need the spacer.

Yes, the same thrust washers that are next to the hi and lo speed gears on the transfer case output shaft. They are about 1/8 inch thick with a 1.125 inch ID hole. The washer goes in between the tranny output bearing and the plate bearing.

SM465 plates don't have a bearing? Seems to me that it would be best to have two bearings on the tranny output shaft to better handle the sideways load from the transfer input gear.

Classic Cruisers SM465 plate adapter, no spacers....red locktite on the bolt, never loose - 4 years of use.

my own copy of the adapter, revised to 6061 alum and some other inprovements, no spacer, 1 year installed, red locktite on the bolt, never loose.....

<--still confused...

465 plate from CC do not include a bearing, nor do mine...

I'm not aware of ANY plate adapters that use any bearings on the input, other than the stock one at the back of the tranny....

Perhaps it is just a Classic Cruisers thing Brian?

According to Pinhead, all the other plate adapters out there have that bearing on them.

I did not think that the gear being on the output shaft, so close to the rear bearing in the transmission would allow for a significant amount of deflection of the transmission output shaft...

But I am the furthest thing from an engineer...or knowing actual strees loads on that shaft and gear combination in this application. I do know that I beat the hell out of my 420/three-speed case and Toyota's R US/Classic Cruisers adapter since 1993 without as much as a hiccup...I have the plate out, since installing the Atlas, and will be installing it on a Toyx4's 420 here in the comming months...

The ONLY thing that I will be changing will be the addition of the bolt locking set up that Lemon posted up pics of in the Orion thread, using saftey wire to keep the bolt locked.

I don't know why they don't all have bearings. The sm420 plates use N307LOE, which is narrower than the bearing on the back of the 420. The bearing is about $25.

The bearing is about the same thickness as the plate and hasn't been seated in its hole yet in the picture below.

Who's adapter is that Pinhead?

I'm wih Pinhead here, only used SM420 plates in about every variation made from Wardens rectangle plate to Xtreme bends, to Spaceghosts, every one used the same brg he shows, don't think I ever use a washer between them, lock them down with the roll pin flat washer bent over on the bolt head.
Never had a problem other than most seep a little grease .......
