Can somebody point me to a link showing how to remove a stock radio from an FJ40 ?

I guess I cannot say for sure this is stock since it does not have "Toyota" on it. but the vol/on-off and the tuning are switched like the early Toyotas, and it is AM only.

When I bought the rig it had a pioneer cassette/stero hanging under the dash, not sure why anybody would install an aftermarket AM only, AND a stereo.

So I think it is the original bass-aackwards AM radio

(Still want to know how to get THIS radio out !)

bump to the top.

Come 'on people.

Help me on this.

How do you release the radio !

If it's anything like the FJ55, then you gotta pull the on/off and tuner knobs. This will allow access to the screw thingys and you'll be able to remove the face plate. On my 55, there were 2 screws located near the front of the radio but behind the dash...if that makes any sense. Can you get the knobs off?

I have a 78, don't know if it's the same, but look under the radio and above the top of the heater, you should see a small bolt, it's an 8mm. It might be easier to undo the wires in the back first (antenna, power, and speaker). They may not have enough slack to let you pull the radio out if you don't undo them first. The easiest way to access the back of the radio is to take off your fresh air duct, the big rectangular plastic tube thing. That will give your hands more room to work.

are you planning on re-using it?

i had some crappy am radio in mine (didn't look stock tho) and i just broke it, couldn't figure out why it wouldn't come out, but i persuaded it a bit and got it out.

The radio doesn't work but no telling why. Over the years PO's have in stalled one stereo or another. Nothing worked when I got the rig and I have torn out all the non-working aftermarket audio stuff.

I would like to fiddle with the stock radio and see if there is something simple (in plugged speaker, antenna, power etc etc) to get it working.

I will probably evenutally install something, but I also listen to a lot of AM (baseball & talk radio), and would like to keep the stock look of the dash if possible.

Thanks for the suggestion Deathstar Canteen, but I do not seem to have that screw. I think I can feel and hole where it should, but the radio is firmly in place, without that screw.

any other suggestions ?

I don't know about an OEM radio but most general radios are held in place by the front face plate. Pull the front knobs off (outer and inner) and you'd see some nuts on the knob shafts that you can loosen. Pull the face plate off and then remove the radio from the rear.

Pull the screw from the bottom shown in deathstar canteen's picture.

Then there is a screw holding the radio in from each sides - they'll be about 2" back from the plane of the dash.

Then slide it out.

Well folks I found it. In my 1980 FJ40, the stock radio is secured by two 8mm bolts on each side. They can be reached from under the dash on each side of the radio.

It looks like there is another sloted bracket at the bottom for the single bolt mentioned by Deathstar Canteen.

It looks like in my case, at some time in the past, a PO decided to install a stereo. the shop that did the install unplugged the AM radio to splice in power for the aftermarket stereo, but left the speaker & antenna wires back inside the dash. (the power plug can be seen in the back of the pic)

So it looks like I have a perfectly good stock radio in living AM mono !!
