So I have read the FAQ and still am unsure what to do here.

I have a 34/34 weber/solex carb on my F motor (its still going :) )

I am at 7000 feet.
I am getting black smoke, just a little bit on idle, and when reved a fair amount.

I purchased (yes they made me pay) a high alt jet kit.

It came with 1 each of:
Main jets: 120,125,135,140
Idle jets: .035,.045,.050,.055,.060

I have looked and can not figure out what jets to install.

Also when adjusting the idle screw it seems like nothing changes as far as the way it sounds.

It is running good other than the smoke.
Do I need a fuel pressure regulator?
I have no fuel return line. And a stock fuel pump.

If it were a Holley, you could get a high altitude power valve to solve that problem, but being a Weber, you're at the mercy of the many jewels of wisdom fellow Mudders are about to lay on you!!!

Johnny C has an excelent write up in the FAQ on webers. Though it does not include the 34/34 it should help. I suspect you might need different air correction jets.

Ok here we go...

I love opening up a brand new part only to fine that it was put together sloppy. The gasket is not making a seal here.

So I'd guess that the gasket was letting air in, but I am still at 7000ft so I assume I need to jet the carb anyway right??

Here are a few pics of my do-do..

Also can anyone steer me in the right direction to get a new gasket?

that is a problem in itself...you need to go to weber north america...but...they are not very forthcomming with info or parts for the 34/34 or 36/36...the carb is quickly being fazed out.

you can reuse the gasket...wipe a excessive amount of white lithium grease on the gasket top and bottom...let it sit of about an hour...wipe it off carfully dont rip gasket and re-use...i have reused my old gasket 2 times already using this ol trick.

if it were my carb...i would reseal the gasket and see if that was the cause of the issue 1st...if it still is getting black smoke...then I would try 135/140 in the mains...then readjust.

if it still is black then try to decrease the idle a step at a time...1st 60 then 55...if still doing it ...my next coures of action would be mains down to 125/135...then idle jets again.

i'd be very interested to see how it works out.

BTW i have been trying to get schematics for the 34/34 and 36/36 from weber direct or weber NA for some time...and no go.

did you get a parts breakdown schematic with the 34/34 kit? or a trouble shooting guide?

Thank you Johnny. I will do as you say and just try the gasket first.

If I do need to do the jets I should put the 135 in the 147 and the 140 in the 150 spot?

On the idle, the 60 would go where the 65 is (next to the oil filter) What about the other side (head side)?? I think it actually says 47.5, would I put the 45 in there?

Now the beer spins my head and I wonder if a 2-3 step on the mains would be better???
Meaning: Put the NEW 135 in the 147 spot and take that same 147 and put it in the 150 spot? Or is that just crazy talk??

I got this carb new from JT outfitters 3-4 years ago, I was a bit naive then and did not known about Mud and believed what there site said about this carb. It came with no paper work other than a simple install instructions. I am disappointed with the lack of info as well. Seems like the black sheep of the family.

Weeeeee, more fun!!! Looks like the jet kit I paid for, that some have received for free. Came with one wrong jet. Instead of a .055 it came with a .065 in that compartment of the box.. I already have a .065 in the carb. Why me?? :crybaby:

I was originally thinking go furthur also ....but...its always better to go a step at a time.....expecially with a finiky 34/34 ;)

Who knows their might not even be any :meh: it is disapointing about the lack of support for these 2 carbs.

A little update.. So I used the white lithium grease and it worked very well to get the gasket flat again, but I was still unhappy with the roundness of that side, and my efforts to get round again were a fail.

I called Weber direct and explained my situation and with no questions asked he said he'd send me a new gasket for freeeee. :bounce:

I had a whole rant I was going to give him if he didn't want to help, so I guess we both win. Now I just got to wait some more.. I will keep you posted with the results..

x2!!! I tried for several weeks to speak to "Jose" at Weber, it seems he is the only person in the world who can answer questions on the 34/34. No one has been able to find the air mixture screw and with the SHI**Y customer service from JT...I am doomed to run rich. Keep us posted on your progress.

do you have his direct email?

he's a very good friend...haven't spoke to him in well over 10 years...

can you PM me his email or extension?

Update: I progressively went through all the jet and ended up at the smallest sets, 120, 125 and 035, 045... Had it running real good. It was only putting out a small poof of black when I would "snap" it. I was doing some fine tuning and was snapping it after each adjustment when.... I heard a thwack fallowed by a shower of coolant, I blew a freeze plug :bang: :bang: This rebuilt engine will be the end of me I swear!! This is the fifth thing that has gone wrong with it... :crybaby: :crybaby:
