Hello All,
Okay, here's the question that I'm sure is older than dirt...I'm thinking about rebuilding the F engine. It'll cost around $3K to have it done by a shop (based on 2 different estimates). I've never rebuilt an engine...
So...here's the question...
1) Should I rebuild it?
2) Should I have it rebuilt?
3) Anyone have a really good extra F engine to sell or trade or, even better, donate? <grin>

Rebuilding an engine is something that will spank you if you aren't paying attention, so first timers have a tendency to screw up. I would look for a good used 2F.

I went through the same issue and am very surprised your machine shop can find the rebuild parts for the 1F

I talked to James for awhile this evening. We first need to diagnose that he really does need a rebuilt or another motor. The 40 has sat for about 2 years IIRC and blew white then black smoke on start up. James has done a tune up (cap, plugs, wires) but hasn't set the timing or adjusted the valves nor run a compression test.

I'm trying to get a local contingent to make a visit in about two months (late Nov early Dec) to donate a day of wrenching. I'll give whatever parts I have on hand.

There is a little more to the story. Read this. https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/183409-hello-all.html

Guys - lets help James out.

James - I hope you don't mind.
