I could have not posted this and just went on with my life but part of being with a group like this is to post ANY and ALL things that happen!

Well as I was installing the new antenna for the CB today all was going well.

As I was snaking the wire up to the front of the truck on the passenger side I had to pull up the floor panels trim etc to snake it nicely.

Well I had to pull out of my garage to get the doors opened all the way to have the room I needed.

Well I didn't have my seat belt on, and the parking sensors were going off (just everything in the garage in close proximity) and it was raining so it was even louder in the garage....I didn't notice the rear passenger door opened about 1/2 inch...

Well because we have 2 trucks in a 2 car garage, it is a VERY tight fit...well the passenger door got caught on the edge of the garage door and totally buckled the rear passenger door.

To the point that I need a bungee cord to keep the door closed.

Here is a pic of the door:

BUT the bright side is the antenna install went great!!

Here is a pic of that plus you can see the door in the background!

My wife is going to **** when she sees that!

Time to call State Farm!

Don't feel alone. Last year I backed into a Eucalyptus tree when leaving OysterFest '07 and ended up having to replace upper and lower deck lids. All while some of my homies watched in amazement.

So you KNOW what they reminded me about at OysterFest '08 . It'll be awhile before I live that one down.

s*** happens. So now you have the perfect opportunity to chop the top, add a roll cage and turn it into a photo safari twundy :flipoff2:.

Might not have happened if you were installing a HAM/2m instead :D

OH MY!!!!!!
I feel your pain!

But....
My 2-1/2 year old wants to know why you didn't close the door. I'm not sure how to explain it too him.

On a positive note...
Instal is looking good, and you could get some spare parts out of that door.

I just explained it too him, my son now feels your pain too.

Already have a ham!

Glad you explained it to him...my answer to my son was....
"Go inside, play the Wii and leave me alone right now"

Holy. s***.

How much does a new door run??? Do they have to replace the ENTIRE door???

I think you son might be going to mommy and asking what does "Fxxx Fxxx Fxxx Fxxx Fxxx Fxxx" mean...cuz daddy just said it 1000 times!

Nice Job! (On the CB antenna install) Where did you find that mounting bracket?

You must have been backing at a good clip to bend that door that far. I sure hope State Farm takes care of you.

Yeah-I'll bet no one else on the board has ever done something unbelievably stupid and regretted it for years. Sucks on a new Cruiser though. I hope your insurance will cover a whole new door.

I actually saw the above referenced incident, and I thought Spresso took it extremely well. We wern't even laughing at him since his wife was there at the time too. The laughing (and the crying) came later.:D

DTT, Wow , I am sorry you had this problem . I believe we all have made some stupid /dumb mistakes along the way.I know I have. Is your garage door that strong or is the Toyota door that weak or collapsable???.A new door is in order me thinks??

Don't feel too bad. After years of going on wheeling trips without any major damage I managed to bash my pass side door on a tree in my own back yard. Oh, even better, in an effort to make peace with our grumpy elderly neighbors we decided to bring them Christmas cookies. After dropping off the cookies I proceeded to accidentally drive over their mail box with the 80. The ARB snapped it like a twig. :frown:

Ouch! That sucks :(

On a related note, did you have to bend the antenna mount at all to get the antenna vertical? I'm trying to figure out how to install the same mount in the same area of my 80, but the hatch lines are nowhere near vertical so the antenna will be tipped towards the truck. Could you post some more pics of the mount and how you installed it?

P.S. Any reason for putting it on the passenger side instead of the drivers side?

The mount I used was this:

MK-274R Adjustable Hood Channel Mini Kit

It was a whole kit.

The main reason for putting it on the passenger side was that the cord was only 18ft and I was not really in the mood to get two cords and using an adapter to put them together. Call me lazy!

I will post some more pics tonight.

I did NOT have to bend it at all. The angle of the metal on the LC allowed it to angle outward and then the part where the antenna screws onto tilts and then tightens where I want it.

You will notice in the close up pic that there is a piece that has a 90 degree bend in it. I thought this would give me trouble, but the hatch is so thin that it never hits that.

I am going to use some blue loctite on it later. I first wanted to make sure it worked out.

Later tonight or tomorrow I will make a CB Antenna install thread.

I then drilleda 3/8" hole into the quarterpanel metal at the same height as the inside lower panel so that I could pull the wire throught he panel inside the vehicle. Then I ran the wire through the panels, down the floor panels from rear to front....under the passenger dash into the center console.

The 18ft length was perfect, literally. It has 6 inches left at the final point.

Thanks for the condolences.

A whole new door...it is not recoverable. The garage is stucco, the LC door itself is not steel, and the LC in movement has ALOT of power behind it....so I don't think the LC door is weak, the only way to describe it is that I am just an idiot.

Believe it not my foot was never off the brake!!

Oh, you mean you now know what almost 400HP feels like IN REVERSE? Lucky you had it in H4 not L4 :) You could sue toyota and blame it on Crawl Control gone haywire...haha...not.

Here is a breakdown of the details of the antenna bracket:

Ouch!
Since your LC is very new, matching the paint will be pretty easy. I'd keep the old door for spare parts. :frown:

The more time goes by the more pissed I get at myself.

I can drive it where I want, BUT not park it. The car won't lock because the door cannot close!

Don't beat yourself up too badly. I did basically the same thing with a Corvette of mine a few yrs ago !! I had played in a tennis tourney in the heat of the summer. I was totally worn out, heat exhaustion et all.. I pulled my vette into the 4 car garage. I'm just sitting there in it when I decide to back the car out so not to heat the up the garage (mainly for the cats) too much . I start backing it up when BAM...The driver door goes right tnrough the sheet rock !! Window breaks an everything... Almost rip the damn door completely off..I'm bacically in a trance and cannot f*****g believe what I had just done !! WHAT A DUMBASS, say I !!!!:eek::eek:

So, Dtt, **it happens !!! :D

I was there when Spressomon hit the eucalyptus. Huge tree, you could see it for miles. However, Spressomon running into it was completely understandable. There are no trees in Reno. He did not see that one coming.

Anyway, the antenna install looks very cool. And who's to say, in the future you can reuse that bracket for a 2m/70cm antenna.

Regards

Alvaro
