Realizing that the only way to get my wife to even attempt to go camping in the curiser is if a Fridge was accessible. Not knowing how much I would use it, I went with a lower cost fridge. I figured that if I use it a lot, I can always upgrade to a Luna in the future. I decided to go with the FP430 - EdgeStar 43 Quart 12V DC Portable Fridge/Freezer on sale from Compact Appliance.

Initially, I was planning on using the fridge without a second battery. However, after reading how “inefficient” the cheap Edgestar frides are, I decided to look into what it would take for a second battery. I looked at IBS, BlueSea, and other companies. IBS was cool, but at over $300, it was almost as much as my fridge! So, I found a Chinese knock off of the IBS system called “T-Max”. It appears to have all of the features of the IBS, but at 1/3 the cost, and it’s available on Amazon![/COLOR]

T-Max was mounted next the the HI/Low Shifter on the Center Console.

Next on the list was a battery tray and battery. Slee had the best option for the tray. A custom made tray that fits the 100 series perfectly. Finally, I needed a deep cycle battery. It had to be a group 34 battery since I did not have much vertical clearance. Once again, I researched and found that Amazon had the best price on the Optima 34 Deep Cycle Battery (FYI.. If you care about the battery warranty, don’t purchase it through Amazon since they don’t honor it. For me, the price savings was well worth the risk!).

The only thing missing was a slide for the Fridge. Edgestar does not make slides, so after looking around I decided to make my own. Lowes had all of the parts, including 24’’ slides. I spent about $80 in parts from Lowes, including all of the aluminum to make the frame to hold the slides. It look me about a day to make the slide since I don’t have very many power tools and didn’t really have any plans. I just made everything up as I went along. To attach the tray to the Cruiser, I used some U Bolts and slid some Cammel back tubing around the bends of the U Bolt. This made a perfect fit to attach to the 3rd row seat attachment points.

Over the course of about 4 evening nights, I put everything together. I used 1 Guage battery wire from Amazon to connect both batteries. I mounted the T-Max Isolator onto the Slee battery tray.

I think it turned out pretty good. Eventually, I will replace the wood with metal, but for now it works OK.

Secured down ready to go off-roading!

Next weekend will be a good test. I'm heading out the Anza Borrego to do some camping!

So after adding all of the expenses up, I have about $750 into this project. The dual battery setup will be very useful for my HF Ham radio operations as well.

Nice design, serves the purpose. May have to borrow your design

I look forward to a review on the edgestar. I was considering the same thing after seeing one a friend had but am hesitant to not get something I can trust like a Luna, Engle or ARB.

I was wondering. When you wired up the fridge to the second battery, did you create a new outlet in the back hooked to the fuse block or did you rewire the existing outlet in the rear and hook it up to the fuse block? Also, is this outlet always on to run the fridge constantly?

I ran 6 gauge wire from the back to the second battery. I wired in a blue sea fuse box in the center console. I cut of the plug at the end and directly wired it into the gauge wire that is constantly on.

Works like a champ!

nice set up ! I am getting ever closer to needing dual batteries ! I am going to consider the T-Max based on price. I have this frig and have run it for a few years and have not had any problems. Only down side is these are heavy when you pack them full of food and beer.

Anyone else running the T-Max and how is it holding up ?

Another thumbs up for the EdgeStar 43 qt. fridge. I've been using one for about 4 years now and works flawlessly. It's currently on garage duty since I haven't made too many trips lately, but when I did, it help up to wheeling nicely.

nice job!
frankly, though, I don't think that there is a strong need for a second battery with the Edgestar and probably any other decent fridge. Mine (the 63L) will easily run a day without the engine running. And I don't see myself camping or travelling without running the engine at least a little bit every day. Heck, the whole point for me is to go explore places. I'd even go someplace just to charge up the battery every day without hesitation. Worst case, I'll just idle the engine for a bit since I'll likely have plenty of extra gas. Or if plan to stay a long time I'll take the generator along, even better. Worst case scenario the fridge stops cooling for a bit. It'll be a while before the food gets warm, especially since I always have ice (frozen drinking water in bottles) anyway.

Great job on the slide! I would also be interested in some feedback on the T-Max system on how it has held up since the install.

The T-Max works like a champ still. It will be put to the test more this summer. It saved me one afternoon. I was installing the Lic Plate light on my Slee Bumper and I had my lights turned on when testing it with the engine off. I forgot about it and drained my primary battery. I just hit the link button and startup my truck up!

In my mind, I don't see much difference between the T-Max and the other systems on the market, except the price.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm was a little leery since there was no reviews on Amazon, plus the 1-2 month shipping estimate. I liked the IBS system, but not the price like you so I'm looking at this one since the one from Painless is not any cheaper and only comes with a toggle switch instead of the display.

Hmm.. mine shipped in two days. I am not sure what the delay is. However, that was a few months ago..

very nice, I like this project alot, i know id be using it pretty often myself!

I figured I would do a follow up review of this setup after 6 months of usage. Everything works great. I added a latch to the slide out which locks the slide in place do I no longer need the front straps. I still use the big strap over the top to secure everything.

The T-max just does its job. I never have to do anything with it since it is all automatic. The fridge runs fine. It is usually serving as a beer fridge in my garage when it is not in the cruiser. It's on all the time.

I actually do use the fridge more than I thought I would. The most I have run the fridge for without driving has been two days. The battery was at 11.8 volts so it could have gone another few hours easily.

For the price of my whole setup, I could purchase two fridges for the price of a Luna. Granted, the Luna is a much more efficient system and would be needed if I was camping for a week with no driving... But I don't do those types of trips. If/ when I do become more adventurous, I may look into the National Luna fridge.

If you think you will use the fridge a lot. I would recommend an ARB or Luna since you may out grow the EdgeStar quickly.

I plan on doing some trips over the summer so I will get to use and abuse the edgestar a little more.

Thanks for the update, I have been waiting on my T Max for a while seems to be getting popular and harder to order. Amazon canceled my first order due to back order times...

How long does it take to charge a largely depleted battery at idle? Just curious?

I decided to insulate my Edgestar today. Using two old sun shades, some duck tape and velco, I was able to craft up an insulaton sleeve to help keep it cooler.

We will see if it makes much difference. I have a feeling it will.

Nice Job! The only question I have is about the color of the fabric... Would that being black not soak in extra heat? Perhaps going with a lighter color would have been better. Anyway, sweet setup!

Yeah, the black cover is from EdgeStar. It was designed to mainly protect the fridge from scratches etc. Not the best of colors...
