Got a CEL last week. P0135 (Driver's side front sensor). I was going to order the sensors via Amazon. There are two part numbers:

234-4169 (Front specific, OE replacement)
234-4209 (Universal front)

Not much price difference between the two (~$10?). What is the difference between the two? Sparkplugs.com also lists these two.

Just curious. 4169 has already been ordered.

Rockauto also lists the 4169's

I'm wondering if the 4169 has the correct harness and the 4209 needs to be spliced. Can't think of another reason for the price difference.

I'm thinking about ordering a couple of these and being proactive since my gas mileage is horrid and my exhaust reeks of unburned fuel. I know one of the fronts is easily accessible from the front PS fender well, is the one on the driver's side similarly accessible?

I would have to agree with this, and although I don't know for sure it certainly makes sense. I usually shy away from anything that says "universal" when it comes to the LC.

Get the 4169. Yes, it has the correct harness. It is the OEM part. I used this on my truck, and it did the trick ;)

According to the following link, the "plug and play" front sensor is the 4169:

Denso automotive parts available online at DensoProducts.com

Note that part number is specific to the 2000 vintage 100-series. When I look it up for my '03, the number changes to a 234-4138

Pretty reasonable pricing at $65. Call CDan though and see what he can do ! He'll suprise you at times.

Yes, both are pretty accessible from the wells with the liner removed. IIRC it's a 22mm box/open.

Just as an update, I replaced the front sensor tonight. Not tough at all. Here are a couple of tips:

-- Drop the "skid plate". I also removed the wheel well liner/splash guard, but it didn't help much. The hardest part was trying to get the harness undone, which I couldn't get enough leverage from the wheel well to get that button to release. Here is the view from the wheel well (O2 sensor is smack dab in the middle)

Here is the view from the bottom with the skid plate removed. Much more room to work with.

I easily got the harness undone and the new O2 sensor installed. If I hadn't removed the wheel and the splash guard, it would've all been done in 20 min, but instead took 40 min. Oh, well.

The CEL went off upon start up. I had my code reader ready to clear the CEL, but wasn't necessary. I was lucky that the O2 sensor came right out. I dabbed some anti-seize on the new one for future removal. Only tools needed were 22mm box wrench, 12mm socket for the skid plate bolts, and in my case, 22mm socket for the wheel removal.

EDIT: Ok, so the wife told me that the CEL hadn't been on since yesterday (good for her to tell me NOW). I'm assuming that the sensor was on its way out anyway, since the CEL had been on for the last week.

Thanks for the update and the pics. These will help when I'm under my rig next week replacing both of the sensors.

PRICE UPDATE: These are still $65/ at sparkplugs.com

Did a quick google search and found a 10% off coupon code as well to offset the shipping! Woo Hoo! Now to remember; where did I stash those D/T's from the first group buy?...

just to confirm, there;s 2 sensors in front and 2 in the back, correct? thanks

Yes. 2 are O2s for catalyst efficiency and 2 are your air-fuel ratio sensors.

2 are mandatory.

2 can be s***canned and resistored if you wanted to.

Warning:

I used the Amazon car selector tool for my O2's. After receiving the parts, I tried installation but the parts were not correct. By warned that the pre-selector tool on Amazon may not correctly identify the correct Denso part numbers for our 100's.

p.s. I've sent the wrong parts back (*-4216 I believe; these definitely don't fit) and have since ordered the parts listed above on Mud, the *-4169's
