Should I buy garrett gt20-52 turbo charger

I'm looking at buying this TurboByGarrett.com - Catalog

from a guy today for around $400, he bought it for $800 but then never used it. From what i've read on Mud this is supposedly a great match with the 3b. Let me know what you all think.
cheers

Thanks Guys
I think im going to go pick it up right now for $400. Anything that I should have a look out for when examining?
cheers

honestly I know nothing about turbos, does it come with the adjustable wastegate? I know I paid around $680 for mine, check my BJ42 resto thread to see it installed

Well i'm the new proud owner of a garrett turbo. I'll post pics tonight. This pretty much just fell into my lap. I was reading up on the gt2052 on mud last friday (because i just bought another Bj60!!!!) and then decided to cruise craigslist and there it was just freshly posted.... very coincedental.
now i just need to hunt down a manifold. Are the north american dealers flexible on prices or are they set on what they quote on their websites? I'll probably end up getting it from mustangconnection, my parents bought their bj74 from Barry, he lives in armstrong which is only 45min from lumby.

i run a gt2052 and it really wakes up the hold 3B. mine is wastegated at 15psi.

unless you've been in there recently, i recommend taking off the head and checking out a few things before you start turning up the pressure! check for cracks and if the head's okay, you might as well replace the likely-cracked precups, the valve seats, lap the valves while they're out and - definitely - replace the old head gasket with the fancy new-style factory gasket. it's good piece of mind. while you're in there, check your rockers for wear and cracking where the pushrods slap away at them.

also, when turbocharging, some might say that - if the current one is still the original - it would be a good idea to replace the water pump...and get another core added to the rad.

my $.02

cheers,

Wow
thanks for all the tip!
Is your 3b intercooled? I'm going to intercool, it makes sense to, there are so many options out there for cheap. What kind of pyro do you have? any suggestions?
Also one thing that i've been curious about is how do you set your waste gate to regulate your pressure?
thanks

looks like mine, nice score. I bought my 13BT manifold from 4wheelauto for like $425, but they are usually between $400-$500, I beleive G&S has them, TBI has them, I amabout to take mine to get ceramic coated along with the wastegate. I will try an look up where I got my oil feed and drain kit, comes with everything you need, u just decide where u are draining the oil to, I went to rear of oil pan up high.

thanks for the info. If you could get that drain kit information that would be a huge help. I'd really appreciate it.
cheers

Do you know the complete model number? They have around 6-7 trim on that model that denote different turbine ratios. The kit Diesel42 and i put together uses the 1 designation (last number in the model number) I think the 3 and 7 can also work without much tweaking of the wastegate. You might get a slightly slower spool from other trims.

The serial number on the compressor housing is 727264-5001
I believe its the same one that diesel42 has.
correct me if i'm wrong
On the compressor housing its says AR51
On the exhaust turbine housing it says AR50

An update and a question
I bought my 13bt manifold while i was home for thanksgiving from mustangconnection.
All i need now is the feed and drain lines and an exhaust/downpipe

This is were i'm stuck. What did you do for a downpipe? If i buy a wastegate outlet exhaust collar such as this; look at #tk057
http://www.jgstools.com/turbo/index2.html

If i use that can i just get an exhaust shop to use a 3" exhaust and mate it to the wastegate outlet? I'd like to keep this on the less expensive side. A custom made downpipe with a flex elbow is too expensive.

Will regular exhaust pipe hold up to the heat exiting at the wastegate outlet?

let me know what kind of solutions that are out there.
cheers

oh and i reviewed some previous posts. My model number ends with #1, is that the same as what you guys have?

for reference I made my both turbo straight pipe exhaust from sumit exhaust parts .. ( include a flex pipe always ..IMOP )

No, ours ends with a 5. for the down pipe - buy a mandrel bent "J", cut out a 90 degree drop and then go to a muffler shop and have them flare a piece of 2.5 inch pipe, then cut the flare off and weld it to your 2.5 inch mandre bent piece. do not use a 3 inch pipe - it is overkill and this turbo needs some back pressure. for a flange use a universal 3 piece type and notch it out to fit. i ran into the same problems and it was annnoying but I am done now.

the truk i have here goes for the rest of the mandrel bent stainless exhaust tomorrow.

So i looked at the exhaust flange again and thought that its probably ment to be welded to a pipe!! no duh
Would anyone agree with me

click on exhaust flanges, then precision machined turbine flanges, then scroll to tk057

Can a regular exhaust shop (without a mandrel bender) bend a 16ga exhaust pipe as a downpipe?

Tapage thanks for the post, i looked at summit. They have cheap flex pipes, where is the best place to place it?

cheers

Ishobie

I didn't see your post before i wrote my last one. Thanks for the info
that's the kind of direction i need.

Where is a good place to by a J pipe?

Also i talked to a exhaust shop and the guy told me that a 2.5" pipe will end up being 2.25 after being bent (i'm not doing mandrel).
My logic was to use 3" so that the tightest bends have a 2.75 or so diameter. does that make sense?

In both cases I use it in the straight part of my exhaust pipe .. at least my both 6 inline have good enough vibration to worth the money using it .. and I thought it's less stree on the weldings and brakets .. even in my exhaust manifold bolts ..

You can see few pics in my threads ( sign )

BTW I buy from summit couple of 90 and 45 and made my own mandrel in the garage .. ( pic a traight tube and done .. )
