I was finally able to try out the Technitop someplace other than the back yard. The weather this past weekend was sucky so it seemed perfect to really see how it stands up to ugly conditions. While it didn't rain too hard it was constant but I stayed perfectly dry.

The set up is simple though a few more steps than a Magnolia or such. So it might take 5 minutes rather than 2 but the room is awesome. The quality of the materials from the canvas to the zippers and mesh is top notch. I wouldn't mind a thicker matress pad but it's better than most.

The take down time might be twice that of the set up time, but no biggie. I appreciate having the rear spare mount to climp up on top and squish it down like an overstuffed suit case. I don't leave the bedding in there though as it would be nearly impossible to close then.

I've had it on Yakima racks for a few months now and have never had any weight shifting when off road. I also don't feel much difference in lateral stability but then again maybe I'm just used to it now. Road noise isn't an issue at all though I must be sacraficing some fuel economy.

With all of the talk about crappy ladders I have to say I have no complaints at all about mine. It's stout enough for anyone who can clamber up it and stows away easily.

If I can find anything at all to pick on it might be the flapping in high winds. I think by dropping the side support poles and using a draw string aorund the tent this could be reduced, but it doesn't bug me enough to try that yet.

I don't think I could justify the retail cost on one of these but if you can find a decent used one they are certainly well built and comfortable. I ended up getting home late because of how dark they are in the morning... it was 10 am before I realised I had better get up and moving.

Glad to see a good review of this tent, as I've had one for well over a year and it's still in the cardboard box it shipped in :frown:
FWIW Overland Journal picked the Technitop as their "editor's choice" in their RTT shootout.

The RTT police will be after you for that!

Dan, do you have a pic of your tent closed up?

I need to make it back up to your neck of the woods soon!

Cheers - Nate

Hey Nate,

Sorry I haven't been by to get you that rod holder rack - one of the guides I work with just snagged it! My weekend there in the tent was along Harrison though it wasn't nearly as wet as your trip up here last year.

Just snapped this one for you. Get in touch if you do head up though.

Thanks for the shot, looks a little lower profile then some of the others. I like my RTT for that aspect and have been working out a slick rainfly VS. selling and upgrading $$$ to something else. My problem is the Ezi-Awn and alike are so damn tall when compacted on the roof, yours seems fairly short. On question, I was under the impression the Technitops were hard cases and not a soft cover?

when i looked into them i was under the impression they are a metal case however there not considered water tight so you have the soft cover as well. However i also thought the techno tent was the same closed hight as the ezzi awn but i maybe wrong.

(on another note, ill be up in bellingham all summer ready to camp any weekend i think another trip is in order?)

P.S. just got back from AZ guess who finaly brought there welder up to bellingham.

Nice dude! I'm certainly up for another trip ........ and would love to get together some welding. I actually have some simple brackets maybe you could help me with?

I need a new tow hook welded up front too there Mike!

The case on the technitip is plastic hard shell and it does seal up very well against dust. The cover is meant to keep the rain out and it really does a good job of that.

Hope to see you guys up here when the weather improves.

NO TALLER THAN THE TECHNITOP....Just measured my Eezi-Awn Series 3 1200 @ 11" don't have a Technitop to compare with...but Overland Journal's RTT comparison has some slightly different measurements as well as put and take down times. These times were done with RTT mounted on a pickup truck (as per emails with author) not a on the roof rack of a land crusier about 7 feet off the ground!!! Hence the packing /unpacking might be a bit longer.
