PTO winch install KZJ78 update 26 June

Hi All

In the process of fitting PTO winch in the KZJ78, as its an auto there is no provision for the PTO select lever.

Has anyone ever fitted one before?

I have an idea but wanted to see if its already been done.

Here is a link to what I have done thus far...

Offroad Express 4wd Forum | OffroadExpress 4wd Forum

PTO gear installed in transfercase.
PTO drive unit bearings changed and output drive changed from front to rear.
Mounting winch underneath...Leaving the electric on front.
(Getting into some competition stuff for fun later in the year)

Thanks Cicak

I spent some time looking at my options today, lying under the truck. (waiting for the world to end)
Decided to use the Toyota pto levers I have but turn them around and mount them to the tunnel.
May have to make the linkage rod longer, but at least its almost in the factory position on the tunnel.
And the rod misses the Auto selector push rod.
Have cut the hole in the tunnel.
Will throw up some pics next week when its mounted.

i have done mine on lj78 auto, will post some pictures soon.

There is a cable type shifter from toyota that was used in some late 40 series (very rare apparently but saw one for sale recently) as well as in some 60 series trucks (maybe not so rare?) Might check in with the 60 series forum and see what they can tell you. No affiliation to the sale but the pics are of mine (as of yet un-installed.) I have been told that it is mounted to the tunnel. I need a new cable for mine.

Will you do something to keep the cable laid in like the jimny guy did? I've never seen that before.

I'm just kicking around the idea for my bj44 of a mid mount. The fuel tank is right behind the rear PTO output.....

Thanks for the info.
Have taken the plunge today as the weather outside is nice, and there is no room in my garage for a truck and welding.
So set up table outside and set to make the lever fit.
Used boot and mount for a template and cut hole in floor / tunnel.
Then utilizing the two lower holes for mounting the boot, ground down top flange on bracket and welded on some nuts. This means there will be no extra holes thru the tunnel....
Then bent the lower part of the bracket to fit snug under the floor.
This happened to align with the speedo mount. So just broke it off and used the spot weld hole.
Will fit it back on later.
Photo's show it in.
Just need to lengthen the push pull rod about 65-70mm then pull it down and tidy it up.
Also I removed the locking plate, will weld it in place once I have got it all good.
And it misses the Auto's linkages.

Nice looking setup.
I am trying to avoid air operated anything at the present time.
Even my freespool will probably be hydraulic (clutch master and slave system)

The winch input drive looks low and venerable to knocks.
The guys here have notched the front chassis cross member a little more than the factory one and moved the radiators up a bit and or get the bottom tank notched to clear the drive shaft.
I wont have this problem being a mid mount.

Thanks for sharing.
