Don't have experience with replacing the entire foam mattress in the RTT with memory foam, but we use one of those memory foam toppers (1.5" maybe?) on top of the stock mattress in our Eezi Awn 2200 and it makes a huge difference in comfort. I am a little unsure about using JUST memory foam since it seems to compress to nothing over time in pressure point areas, so in about 10 mins it might feel like your hip is on the plywood.. Maybe something you want to test before you cut your stock mattress up.

Costco carries those, inexpensive and returnable.

Did some research. There are apparently a lot of complaints about smell and toxic fumes with the general type. Not such a big deal with outdoor use of course, but let them aerate for a while. And I agree, 3" over hard may not be so good. These things are very heavy too.

The quality is critical for usability, IMO. I would be hesitant to get them from a place like SG.

I like the idea of returnable, I'll check the local costco to see if they have em'.

Thanks!

I received the memory foam mattresses I bought off ebay yesterday.

They were actually 4" instead of 3".

I've never had memory foam before, so I have nothing to compare it to, but here are my initial thoughts:

  1. It's heavy.
  2. At first I thought it was going to be rock hard, but when I laid down on it, it conformed to my body within a second or two, and was quite comfortable, but was definitely different.
  3. Laying on my side, which at my hip imposes the most stress on the mattress, I still did not "sink" to the bottom. Therefore, no additional padding will be needed.
  4. There was a scent to them, which I think will go away. It is not strong by any means. My wife is super-sensitive to smells and it didn't bother her. Once they air out, I think it will not be noticeable. Besides, I'm having microfiber covers made for them.
  5. They were factory seconds, so they were different colors and had writing on them. Again, I'm not concerned as they will be covered.
I looked at the ones on SG, and if I bought the equivalant at SG it would have cost me $280 at the Club price plus shipping. I got mine for $108 to the door.

Here's a link to the seller's store: eBay Store - Blueridge Bed: IRREGULAR CLEARANCE BLOWOUT, 10LB Visco Memory Foam, 15LB Visco Memory Foam

FYI, a little ebay sniping may be required to get the best price.;)

I forgot to mention that I will probably have some pictures of them up soon in my off-road camper build thread linked below in my sig line.

Thanks for the information. I just got back from the local Costco and the only memory foam mattress they had was 12" thick. Since this is for a RTT that's not going to cut it!

So tell me, you ordered 3" but got 4" are you planning on using that in a RTT? :EDIT: Sorry I just read....camper....:EDIT:

If I order from the same sight how would you recommend I get the correct size (3" instead of 4")?

Thanks!

Also, they see to have different grades. They offer every mattress in 10Lb 15Lb, 20Lb and 32Lb. What does this mean?

I don't know that you would be able to specify. However, I'm planning on cutting up the ones I have. Apparently, using an electric knife on these things is the trick, and I've got one from my grandma in the original box that's gotta be straight outa the 50s or 60s.

As to the different weights, what I read is that it has to do with the content of actual "visco-elastic blah blah blah", or how much memory foam there is and how stiff it is. I got the 10lb and it's good for what that's worth.:meh:

Good luck!

FOLLOWUP:

Having spent a weekend in the camper with the memory foam on top of plywood, I decided to add some thin cheap Wal-Mart sleeping pads underneath the memory foam. I found that through the night, sleeping on my side, I bottomed out the memory foam and was not as comfortable as had hoped.

So I put a thin thermarest under my side of the mattress one night and it made all of the difference. Unfortunately, after the :princess: got wind of what I had dun, the thermarest was underneath her for the remainder of the trip.

To funny.

I too have made a little progress.

I called around to get pricing and advise from foam manufactures all over the country. Just about every one of them recommended that for the thickness I was using that I go with extra firm. Ahh yea, that's what I have now...

It was in a conversation with a manufacturer in CA that recommended that I lay the mattress out and walk on it. He said it would break the mattress down making it softer. This being the free option I thought what the heck and gave it a try.

After several methodical passes over the top on all directions a gave it a test. To my surprise it was softer! Not a ton, but enough to make big difference. When I first got it I could lay on my back and would not bottom out anywhere. While this might sound ideal it felt like lying on carpet. Now when I lay on it I can tell the my pressure points are just barley touching the ground taking full advantage of the thickness of the mattress.

I'll give this a try, but in the mean time I plan to shop for a topper of some sort. I think I have become to accustom to my sleep# bed.:princess:

Hope this helps someone...

For reference this is the Ezi-Awn 1800 3" thick mattress and I weigh 210. Hope this helps someone else.
