Sorry, it's been a while. Busy at work, busy with life etc. Anyway, about a week and a half ago my rig overheated out of the blue. I let it cool down, started it back up again and got maybe half a mile down the road before the water temp was pegged. At that point, shut it off and decided to have it flatbedded to a place in town. I got a call monday saying it was a blown head gasket, and it was going to be $1300. I figured "fine, it's an old truck that came with a maintenence record that wasn't very in depth...whatever." Well I just got a call back today (thursday) with a new verdict: cracked head. FML. 123K miles. I guess the P/O really didn't take very good care of it at all. Talk about caveat emptor. Anyway I'm done ranting, just thought I should share my LOVELY story. Anyone else here gotten a cracked head? Or am I just that lucky?

Yeah that's what I was trying to figure out too...what came first the chicken or the egg? Knowing Toyota's quality, it was probably my idiotic move of driving it AT ALL after the overheating. Oh well. Off to cruiserparts.net I go!

Check the parting section and parts classifieds first, there is probably something closer and cheaper than cruiserparts for you. The chicken and egg question seems important to me b/c if the overheating caused the head to crack, you don't want to have the same problem with the new engine.

Go on son, rant all you want you, you deserve a good rant right now. I hate the "new verdict" phone call. I've gotten that call too.
It's happened to all of us.
Decision time .....new engine or new rig???

Depends on what the bottom line is going to be. Probably new engine if it comes to that, I like my current rig too much.

Well the blown HG caused the overheating which caused the head to crack, is my thinking as far as the chain of events goes.

yup, I would not put too much blame on the PO for this one.

but good luck with the repair and all.

Yeah, just started backtracking through the sequence of events and realized that although the HG wasn't my fault, the cracked head definitely was. kjergiu489u4iusren8094n98u54nier

I like that idea, that's probably what I'd do too.

headgasket on a 3fe is very unusual, especially with such a low mileage truck. I would make sure the rest of the cooling system is good before going too far with the new head/engine. was there still coolant in the truck when it overheated the first time? green, red, mix of the two?

dang, the 1FZ thing is contagious maybe? It's now getting into the 3Fs? sure seems like it's growing worse these days ....

2F/3F heads crack on a regular basis when over-heated.

The guy also said the belt that turns the water pump was a little loose, and that may have caused the cooling system to run less efficiently. But I mean I've had the truck for 7 months and it was always running at normal temp. Green coolant w/distilled water.

Low mileage truck, yes. But also nearly 20 years old.

Shot an e-mail to landcruiserman to tell him I'd take the head and to get back to me with a price (part plus shipping) so that I can drop some scratch into his paypal and he can send the head on over to sunny Californ-i-a. BTW, with my original estimate being $1300, how will that change? It shouldn't change too much since both a HG job and replacing a head involves taking the head off, right? Or am I mistaken?
