I've decided to upgrade my radio on my 80. I'd been wanting a dual bander for a while, plus the location where the FT-2800 was installed was not very "Poquita" friendly. She would step over the controls and change the frequency or turn the radio off completely. Plus the sound coming from the back is not always the best to understand.

With inspiration from FirstToy and Rick's installs. And the help of Ken Dean, I pull it off.
Here are some pics of the install:

I am in the process of doing a similar install and came up with a question. I have the separation kit to remote the 8800R's faceplate, but how do i also remote the Mic? Meaning the faceplate will be up by the rear view mirror as Alvarob did, so i do i get the mic remoted and not hanging down from the mirror?

Any quidance would be appreciated!

You can make an extension cable and mount it wherever you want. I believe you can use standard ethernet type wire and some RJ12 connectors. I plan on doing that exact thing.

Here is the pinout:

EDIT: Cat3 only has 4 conductors, so you'll have to use something with at least 6. An option would be to use cat5 and only use 6 of the 8 conductors. The RJ12 connectors should work and you'll need a gender changer like this:

To make sure we are are talking about the same thing, i want to have the faceplate/control head mounted remotely (which the speration kit i have takes care of) and i want the mic conected directly to the radio, not the face plate. Is this possible?

OK. So basically then i need to run a single "extension" cable to connect the radio to the now remoted faceplate and an additional cable from the faceplate to the mic i have mounted elsewhere (and i use the gender changer noted above to connect the two). Right?

Correct. The mic plugs into the faceplate so one cable from the body to the faceplate (included in the seperation kit) and you'll need to make an extension cable with a gender changer so you can mount your mic down by the shifter or console or wherever. The mic is powered, so you may want to use slightly thicker wire. I think cat5 is 24ga, so you may want to use 20ga or so. Perhaps use a 20/6 shielded cable and ground the shielding (at one end only) to the body down by the gender changer.

Another option is to just take the short piece of jumper wire that connects the body to the faceplate (with phone jacks on both sides) into a DIY type electronics store and ask for so many feet of this cable. The mic and the jumper use the same connector. They may even be able to make on with a female jack on one side and a male on the other, eliminating the need for the gender changer.

Does anyone know, and or assume, that mic cable is straight through vs. a crossover cable. If i assume straight through, i can simply crimp an r12 connector at each end, use a gender changer and i am in business.... Right ?

I found some 6 conductor phone cable at Ace Hardware for a few dollars. I think it was like 25'. I ran that from the remote-mounted faceplate (I mounted it overhead) to the center console, and then joined it to the mic with a female/female connector.

Great! This is what i needed to hear. So just normal telephone cord and a female/female connector....Thanks!

Yes, should be able to use a standard phone cord. Just make sure it uses an RJ12 type connector and is wired straight through (1-1,2-2,etc) not crossed (1-6,2-5,etc). Most of them I have seen use very small wire (typ 26ga although I have seen some 28ga). Try to find one that uses 24ga if possible. I have seen some black flat cable (like the orginal jumper wire connecting the main unit to the faceplate), but you may have to order this online.

Another idea is to mount the coupler somewhere allowing quick disconnect. This one looks promising:

Modular Coupler, RJ12 (6x6), Straight, 50µ, Black, Deluxe Panel - ECF504B-6S

Thank you again! I figured out my problem...
I accidently was using a 4pin connector vs. 6pin and thus no-worky. The mic powered up but no transmit or radio controls. Once i figured out my mistake, all was well.
Thank you again!
