Well bit the bullet and started my xr10 build.

Been doing my research over at rccrawler.com, but 'mud's my home so figured I would post up here as well.

So far:
xr10 kit
pro-line chisel G8 tyres (we have a ok local rc shop, so like to give them business when I can and these seem fine for my use)
hitec hs-7950ht servo

Things on the "buy" list as funds are avail to complete.
2x Tekin FXR esc's: http://www.tcscrawlers.com/Holmes-Hobbies-Torquemaster-Pro-Handwound-540-45-Turn-p-17870.html
-or-
2x Tekin FXR Combo (Tekin 45t Motors): (http://www.google.com/products/cata...a=X&ei=Ja42T5uoBfDJiQL6_bywCg&ved=0CFgQ8wIwAw)
2x Holmes 45t Handwound Pro motors (http://www.tcscrawlers.com/Holmes-Hobbies-Torquemaster-Pro-Handwound-540-45-Turn-p-17870.html)
GT3b Hacked radio w/ 6channel receiver (http://overkillrc.ecwid.com/product?5583397)
Something like this for battery: CheapBatteryPacks - Elite 1300 11.1V 35C Lipo Pack

Fun project, enjoyed building for the most part ;). But addictive, my list of upgrades is growing quick!

Keep us posted with progress and pics....thanks

This will be interesting for me

Thanks. Not much progess as of yet. My servo showed up (HitTech HS-7950HT) and got it sorta aligned and got the paint done. Nothing fancy, but tuned out pretty good for being my first time. Hopefully will be ordering the hacked GT3B tx and 3ch receiver tomorrow.

Bring it to McGrew!
I'ld go HH with their waterpoofed ESCs.
See you in July!

I hope to have it complete by then! :) The rocks by the river would be fun!

See you soon!

you should upgrade the motor plate, bearings to keep from eating gears. Or, do it once and upgrade the gears to the rc4wd gears along with the vanquish plates and cases.

Are you planning on running to ESCs? I would run castle sidewinder micros.

also get a robotronics steering arm.

Most guys are chewing up the stock gears pretty quick.

Thanks! Just ordered the hacked gt3b radio w/ and additional 3ch rx.

Yes planning on running 2 ESCs. And yep, the more I read I will getting at least some motor plates.

My basic goal right now is to have it ready for wheeling this summer and leaning more. From there I will start fine tuning w/ some V parts, bearings, etc, etc, etc ;)

Sidenote: I SUCK at soldiering. I can, but ain't pretty. If any is interested once I get all the pieces in doing this job let me know. I'll pay for time and shipping both ways.

get a couple of clothes pins. They will act like a second set of hands holding wires together while you solder them. You will get better at it, but just like needing to know how to weld when having a cruiser, you really need to be able to solder.

If i were in your shoes, get one ESC and a punk dig ($45). Get a cheaper dx3e and spend your money on rc4wd gears and vanquish motor plates. I had the vanquish motor plates, upgraded bearings and vanquish motor cases and still blew up a set of gears. I know you are doing your homework but i'm just trying to give you some ideas. I have heard of a lot of people chewing up their gears on small climbs or after the first 10 minutes. Go ahead and put some money there and forget about it.

 Thanks for the insight. At least I know how to desolder OK .

Controller and RX are already ordered (the gt3b/hacked and 3ch rx). But I will seriously consider going a single ESC and punk. I haven't purchased any of that now so have time decide, etc.

Thanks for the help. So many choices our there, it's hard to know exactly where to start. Being a somewhat budget build it's nice to know where to start from. The sad and good part is I have feeling once I get my feet wet I'm going to want more LOL. But alas this is a fun build as it is now.... with plenty of room for improvement.

I totally understand the budget. That's why i say gears since that is the weakest link on the truck. Get those right and you won't have to worry about them again. Everything else is more of a tuning upgrade.

Ordered motors this week. Went cheap and bought 2 Holmes Hobbies TorqueMaster Sport 540. We'll see. Haven't dug up anything horrible about them and for $28 a pop I thought I would take the chance.

I would put my money on anything that Holmes sells being pretty darn good. If you went cheap you would have gone with some integy motors.

I'm running team Brood 35t motors right now. They are pricey but to be honest i can't tell that much of a difference between them and some cheaper motors.

Coming along. Just got confirmation my "hacked" gt3b controller and rx shipped. :)

Motors installed  Need to go grab some wires now to solder up.

looking good.

Check this out... saw on the crawler board about stuffing your BEC up under the steering servo! Also got a battery try and some servo armor.

 Ya, stuffed is right. Think I want to run a tray like yours as well.

Well that was fast. Just need ESC and BEC ... oh and battery and charger and I may have a functioning crawler :bounce:

Took the final plunge today. 2x Tekin FXR in route with a Castle BEC. Found my heat shrink. (ok almost finaly, need a charger and battery(s)

Everything torn done and awaiting parts :D.

Question

Received my Tekin Fx-r ESC's today. They come with a capacitor. I also got a castle BEC. Are they the same thing?? or do I need to wire/solder up the "power cap" as well as the BEC?

According to Tekin, caps are absolutely necessary.
rccrawler has alot of info, and Tekin has their own forum:
Best XR10 Wiring Jobs... - RCCrawler.com Bulletin Board

Team Tekin Forum • Index page

From what i understand, the capacitor protects the esc on start up.

The bec bypasses the esc in powering servos, preventing the esc from brown outs.

Not sure on the fx-r, but I think both the esc and bec are programmable, Hotwire cable for Tekin and Castle Link for bec. The bec works with factory settings, but the tekins may need serious tweaking. (my own experience with my RS).

Hope my info is right and it helps
