I've never seen it on an angle like that before. Usually it seems people just come straight from the back and really only gain 2 or 3 inches at the wheel opening.

I have been thinking of doing something there. I have a dent on one side and rot on the other.
 
I am transplanting a front fender wheel arch to replace the rear wheel arch.
Cut it all off then, you don't need all that low hanging steel where you're going.

That tailgate in the picture I posted was built to function and if I removed to two 1/4"-20 bolts holding it closed it would.
After I spent three days building it that way it was painfully obvious there was no reason to open it when everything inside that area is bolted down.
