Finally got to install this gearbox that was rebuilt by West Texas of road and now its leaking from the adjustment nut. I only have about 100 miles on it and it started leaking like a sieve.

Also, I could not get the adjustment screw to go in or out even with adjustment locking nut loose. (and yes, I tried PB blaster)

To top it off, I can see mangled rubber underneath the adjustment nut.

What gives?

Could they have overlooked something?

Here's a pic...

Is that adjustment screw flush with the top of the nut? That looks a little off to me.

Here's a picture of how I got mine back from the local rebuild place:

I'm not sure what that thing does, but I know that over-adjusting it is bad. Maybe thats why it is leaking. Something ain't right. I'd be giving them a call.

Wow, that looks nice.

The screw is where it was when I got it back from WTOR since I cannot move it in either direction. Prior to it leaking, there was WAY too much play in the steering wheel and all the steering stuff is new(TRE's, draglinks, etc).

Also, the u-joints in the steering shaft are good and have hardly any place, so the slack was in the PSGB.

When I got home after running an errand, I smelled PS fluid and looked and found it leaking from her AND the adjustment nut was totally loose!

Thanks. My local place did good work.

So the screw will not move inside the nut, but the nut is loose? :hmm:

That's weird man. Lemme read some stuff in the Chassis and Body Manual.

EDIT

So I found this:

So the screw adjusts the preload on the shaft inside the gearbox. So it seems like if it was too tight that may increase pressure? I'm confused too...

I hear you...I'm confused too. It's almost like they staked the screw in that position for whatever reason, I mean it is TIGHT!(that's what he said). It will not budge.

You bother to call them yet?

No, just noticed this today. I wanted to make sure I didn't do anything wrong before I called them and looked like a dunce.

I understand things can fail and this is why I brought this here to try and figure out what could have gone wrong before possibly wasting their time.

They had to rebuild mine 4x before all the leaks had stopped. They will take care of all the shipping. Call them.

Even with the issues I had I would use them again.

btw: my first rebuild was leaking in same place and there is an o ring right under the adjustment screw that someone forgot.

I don't know if this makes a huge difference or not but they use Gates rebuild parts, not oem Toyota. I called them and they will rebuild the box with Toyota parts if you send them the parts, which will drop the rebuild price to $100.

Hmm, that sounds exactly what's gojng on. I'll call them and work it out.

Thanks

Just talked to them and they're making good on fixing it, but now ill be without my 60 for probably a week or two.

I'll post back what they find.

look and see if the seal is there.

It's a washer with a rubber portion in the center.

If it's not there, a replacement washer should be easy enough to find.

I see the washer, but the rubber is all mangled. Again, the bolt was loose and the screw will not turn with the nut loose.which I don't get.

If your wheels are turned slightly you could be loading the sector shaft on the worm gear. That would make it very difficult to turn the adjustment screw.

As long as the box is not out of adjustment, then I would not worry about adjusting it. I'd take the lock nut off and replace the washer/seal.

Ask Matt to send you one. Certainly easier than returning the entire box right?

Okay, so that nut/bolt does come out? I loosened it and it stopped when it looked like most of it was out. I didn't want to damage it so I stopped.

The adjustment screw should not come out all the way.

You should at least be able to get the nut loose from the adjustment screw. If the top of the screw is mangled at all the nut might not want to come off all the way.

The seal goes under the nut.

Talked to Matt, he's going to send me a new seal.

Question remains, does that bolt/nut(not the screw) come out all the way in order to place the seal or can it be slipped on without it coming all the way out?

The threaded portion is connected to the sector shaft. It does not come out.

The nut needs to come off to put the seal on.

There is no bolt, it is more of a stud.
