I second the recommendation for Disk brakes in the front, also try to upgrade to power brakes. I had a '69 with no power and drums and when those heat up, it got plain dangerous.
Power steering if you have the time and budget, the rest, leave alone and enjoy.

Had a fantastic day in her yesterday. Found myself creating errands just so I could go for a drive. Also attracted some nice cars that wanted to park next to the cruiser.

I'm using the cheat code to learn about her and drove the old lady to Landcruiser Specialist off 183 this morning for the team to do a thorough inspection.

Things discovered:
Driver rear drum brake makes a 'clunking' sound when using- almost like it's catching on a disfigured section inside the drum.
It sputters a bit under initial throttle. This clears a bit with the choke pulled out 1 inch.
Shakes like crazy @51-55 mph. Possible tie rod?
Passenger barn door has significant rust bottom inside. Will need to address once I get to body, current focus is drivability.

Only thing I can say it's a age thing. Bought a 68 back in 1974. Within a few months I swiched the column shift for a floor shift. Mid nineties installed a four speed and lock-rite front and rear. Only other mods were not drivetrain related. Go anywhere with lock-rites but hate the clunk in the back and steering up front. Last FJ40 I bought is a 70 with the column shift, stock open diffs and stock brakes, no plans to change anything. If your over heating your drum brakes you need to change your driving habits. Even on my modern DD with a automatic I down shift on hills. I don't thing people today were taught to drive or needed to drive with modern vehicles like you needed to back when these made. Only draw back I see if you do alot of water crossings or drive in the rain alot then drum brakes don't compare to disc brakes. My 68 will fifty years old in September, besides being a top heavy 4X4 it wasn't built with idea of using it on highway and streets fifty years later. The closest FJ40 I see as being a good DD today is the Icon. TLC traded marked FJ40 so can't say it isn't one. Plus it was titled and registered using a old Land Cruiser title. These are far from being anything like the old FJ40 on anything but looks.

Came back with a clean bill of health. She seeps a little fluid here and there and the carb needs a tune. Game on! Now to find some vintage plates. Anyone have a source aside from flea bay? Would love to put on year proper 1967 plates and NOT spend $200 to acquire them!

Go visit your local antique stores, I think I paid $20 or less for a good set of plates. You can usually make counter offers.

Edwin Kincaid at Land Cruiser Specialist is a Weber expert. Surprised he didn't disclose that while you were there.

Vintage Texas License Plate 1967 HKD I64 Set of 2 Matching #s | eBay

Here's a better set, in Austin. Pricey at $99, but its OBO. Offer him fiddy bucks.

Vintage 1967 Texas license plates - MATCHING SET Tag "BDZ 506"

Great catch, I was able to acquire these locally. Thanks for the lead!

I spoke with Sean and he seemed confident he could get the carb set right. It was a challenge driving tonight with a constant sputter. I'm pulling the choke different lengths to help clear the cruiser. Looking forward to a tuned carb!

Hey Gang,

Eventually I'll contribute as I get more familiar with this rig... in meantime I'm going to drain more info. I want to understand what is missing from my dash. Right now I have a couple open notches. Does anyone have a photo of an oem, intact 1967 dash? I know I'm missing hazard lights but I'm uncertain if they were ever included. Photo of my dash as it sits below.

Beautiful original truck!
Don't think Hazard lights were added until 1968?
If you ever decide to replace the OEM wiring harness, with a new OEM harness with "upgrades", let me know in the fall. I build wiring harnesses for the early trucks and can add the Hazards lights using a later model FJ40 switch and flasher.
I also sell wiring stuff for the FJ40's...

Been driving the Cruiser with many smiles. The Weber carb has come out of tune again and I find the land cruiser backfiring and sputtering. Bummed, and will take it back to LCS for a check.

Question for the group: when I turn off the engine, I can hear water dripping. Like the coolant is moving in the engine. Is this normal?

Thanks!

Metal parts expanding and contacting noise?

Are you sure it's the weber and not the points causing issues? Sounds Like the points to me ... had they been cleaned up and adjusted?

It could be points but I'm not experienced enough to make the call. The cruiser starts easy when cold but takes more cranks once its warmed up. I smell a lot of gas when it fires which leads me to suspect the carb.

For the noise after warmed up, it's very much a dropping of water/ coolant. Not the 'tink ' sound of metal parts I'm familiar with

Here is the dash on my 67. I am going to fill some of these holes as they are not suppose to be there.

Here are my observations of yours.

just saw this thread. Nice rig and welcome to MUD!! Like you, I always get a smile when I drive my rig. even if you have some issues, I think it was worth what you paid. I have seen a lot worse for not much less!! I like the idea of swapping back to stock carb. Keep posting and enjoy.

You may want to check your coolant level, I get some gurgling after turning it off. I am still trying to chase it down, I dont think it is normal, but it runs great and doesnt run hot, no oil in water or water in oil, so I am thinking it may have an air pocket......or a cracked head!!
