I was thumbing through an old "4-wheel & off-road" magazine (I do that alot) and came across a picture of a Land Cruiser on its lid. Under the rear axle the dude had coil overs AND leaf springs instead of using just a bare shock. What is the advantage of this? Seams like a waste of money to me. What are your thoughts?

common back in the 70s and 80s, firmer ride and a little more lift. an idea that's fallen by the way-side.

did you notice that the rig is also soa, has lift blocks opn top of that and th shocks are mounted on the u-bolt plates?! not the best setup i've ever seen but probably something to do with trying to get those 40" ( i assume ) boggers to clear.

love the factory spare.......

I pulled some of those shocks off of my 1980 when I bought it.
Still in a box in the garage somewhere.

Yeah I wonder how that rides on 3 40" boggers and 1 factory tire. Its probably just mounted there as a rubber cushion in case he backs into a tree or something.

Almost every Cruiser I have bought, 7 of them, has had those silly helper springs on the shocks.

I put some on a truck back in the 80's. Great stuff, could get them from the local track auto and they would give about an inch or so lift and did not effect the ride much. You could crank them more to tighten the spring up and lift it more, but then it was a very very rough ride. Worked great for reducing the tire from hitting the fenders when off roading with the setup I had.

Back then I did not have the money to order a real lift from Downey!!!

Backing into a tree would be the least of his problems......

I had some of those coil-overs on my Pig once...bought 'em from MAF back in the day.

too many springs? too much bounce? maybe that = a roll over?
is it possible that too stiff a ride and a little too much off-camber caused this? would more flex have kept him rubber down?

I dont have the answer.
thats just my thoughts, right or wrong

State of the art - in their day!

I have pulled more of those off rigs than I can remember.

I use a similar approach on my primary trail '40...
I have 1 ton Chevy springs under it and additionally I have three different sets of light weight, progressive, high travel coils that I can install in a few minutes to tailor the rig for the loads it will be carrying when I head out on a long run.

These are full size coils, not coil over shocks and they mount between the (modified) ubolt plate on top of the leaf springs and the frame.
