V8 install under way.....well, we thought everything was sitting where it needs to be. I know you have to bend your shifter to clear the heater and fit the stock shifter hole. So today I remove the shifter just to test the fit. Transfer shifter is not going anywhere. Clearance from top of tranny to tranny hump is maybe 1"...did we F up? There aren't tranny x-mber cushions installed yet either, which will raise it even more. 75 tranny hump and tub is a 76.

I don't even know where to start on this one.......

what conversion kit?

i had a downey and the PO hacked my hump up for it to work. can't remember how much clearance i had tho if you want pics PM me.

Downey bellhousing adapter. Maybe push the tub forward? I have not tightened the body mounts 100% yet....

Just cut the new hole where it should be and bend your shifter back a bit. Mine is exactly like yours. It will touch the heater if you don't bend it, (1/2 inch) but it wont if you put a little bend in it.

Mig in a new top plate to your hump, finish and paint.

I'm thinking build an entirely new one. Damn. Does it matter if the hump is a year younger than this tub?

ill take pics tomorrow for you. i will check my computer to see if i had any. the shifter looked close to the heater on mine but it did fit and shift fine when i was imagining driving it in the garage before i tore it down :D

yes i know sad, but the real sad part is i had a passenger....

nope, you are already adulterating by putting a chebby in it

cut it

Here's mine ---I switched from a 3 speed to 4 and it was originally a column shift. The PO installed a floor shift 3 speed and then I changed that.

I got underneath and scribbled some marks with a sharpie marker then cut it out with my dremel

if the hole is to big for the shifter boot you can get a larger one or make or buy a metal ring to extend it --put in a rubber gasket and it should look good

I thought about making a big square bolt in panel to access the tranny too

Here's how I solved the same problem.

The TC shifter is on the left. I found a Hurst shifter on the discount table at my local speed shop. I basically made the shifter come out of the floor in the stock position by modifying it to move back the amount needed. This could be done with the stock shifter and some scrap steel if you don;t want the bling.

The pic on the right is the 4speed shifter. I cut it ~1" above the connector, rotated it 180 degrees and welded it. I recommend tacking it, putting it back in the transmission and verifying the relative position with the seat, console, whatever to position it where most advantageous and comfortable for you. Remove, weld, paint, reinstall.

Last 2 are finished product.

Seeing how others solve the same problems is always helpful but these are realy one banana projects. What did you ever do about the much, much more difficult task of wiring the EFI engine???

Dave, I like that. A lot. I will perform that same maneuver. What did you do for the transfer lever? Mine is slammed up against the hole in the hump and can't move. Wiring is still gonna be just me and my three brain cells figuring it out. I also have three other cars in line ahead of this one right now that have minor issues all requiring $$$. I want a damn book. A basic idiot's guide to automotive wiring. How friggin hard is it? I am also going to learn to weld while I am waiting around for the people I have offered to pay handsomely get their butts sorted and get over here to wire in this 350......

Hump mod

Heres what i did with mine , Had to move main trns hole up to center trans , cut a notch in the heater which included the flaper and cap it with 2006 Ford ranger boot which fit perfect

FJ60 top plate to shift hole back?

x2.

I don't think he 'get's it'.:frown:

I just installed one of these in a 1970, and it made a world of difference. Then again, it always does.:)

i've got the 700r4 and a new hump to install...anybody have any auto tranny pics??

... What did you do for the transfer lever? Mine is slammed up against the hole in the hump and can't move....

Pic on left and first described in my response.

Never heard of using the 60 top plate. What else do you mod to fit the lever or is it just a drop in? I have a plate enroute....
Seems the linkage would no longer line up if to moved the lever backwards 4-5"....have an install link?

the fj 60 top plate is the whole top of the transmission shifter tower and all it works great i had it like that in mine till i swapped to a 465 now its sitting in the back yard

Greencruiser- take a pic of your setup if you can. 4spd original tranny hump fit right in without modding it? Cool......lemme see, lemme see!

Alex,
Forget the FJ60 stuff. Cut the shifter, rotate it 180 degrees, weld it, paint it, install it. Done. Do you not have a welder or know how to use it? The transmission shifter is the EASY one. The transfercase shifter takes a little more planning, forethought and fabrication skill. YOU CAN DO IT!
