Would This Rust Concern You

Hello All,

I am in the market for a pre-loved LC200. There is a vehicle for sale near me which spent two years in New York prior to making it to Texas. I plan to keep the LC200 for many years to come. There are some rust spots on the frame and joints which can be seen on the video link below:

Would this amount of rust be concerning to you and would you shy away from purchasing this vehicle due to this rust?

From the video, that wouldn’t bother me. Looks pretty clean to me. I would ask for a picture of the Kdss valve. Even that will have some rust

What are your plans for the rig? Leave it stock? Build it up? Do you tend to get something and keep it for a couple years then sell or do you intend to keep this thing forever?

IMO you live in Dallas and have the opportunity to own a 200 that will never rust, even if you own it for 20 years. If that is the goal, I’d hold out for a truly rust free one.

That isn’t bad, at all. But eventually bolts into the frame, in the suspension, and under the body WILL seize, it is enough rust for that, and it will only progress. If you only keep it for a couple years, I’d say live with it. But if you plan to build, and keep forever, avoiding the future frustration and cost of stuck bolts will be worth waiting.

Thanks. I was planning to start building and moving into some light overlanding. The plan would be to keep the rig and pass it possibly pass it on to one of my sons (both under 10).

This! If the deal is too good to pass up then go for it but like @bloc said, you're in the mecca of Cruisers and should have access to trucks that have lived their entire lives here in Texas and that's what I would hold out for.

Not a big deal. Scrap and paint the surface rust.

Looks fine. Ask for additional video or pics around rear cross member, hitch and spare carrier. Snow and salt tends to collect back there as well.

The answers you will get here in regards to rust are going to depend by region.

That truck looks clean from the video and I personally wouldn't hesitate if the price is right!

Yeah, I'd wait. Unless it is a screaming deal.

Plenty of people will talk about treating that rust, but that does nothing for rusted hardware. Unless you plan to pull every bolt and anti-seize it, you will have issues later. My concern isn't as much it being ugly or structurally compromised, but doing future repair/upgrade work.

I bought a somewhat crusty 100 back in 2016. It was a DC truck, and had seen a lot of treated roads. Had rot in the tailgate.

The good news is that once it was in NC, the rust didn’t get worse, and the new owner hasn’t had any issues with the truck. Imo, the 200 is more rust resistant than the 100.

You might get a good deal on it, but a salt belt truck will get dinged on resale.

That’s a very small amount of surface rust. The hardware will be fine. It won’t get worse, especially once in TX. You’ll long tire of the vehicle before it’s ever a hindrance.

that rust is nothing at all.
You can buy a wd-40 corrosion specialist or corrosion inhibitor and spray it on those parts where you see some rust.
It does a very good job acting as a barrier. Respray if required once a year.

Depends on the price , I would rather travel for a rust free compared to doing all the work on a rust bucket , especially if your paying the same price .
