I was looking online to find some new striped wire to replace some of the po's handiwork. I found there are four different types of wire listed below. Anyone know the differences? And which type to use for an FJ40? The four types as found on www.wireandsupply.com are:

SXL
GXL
TXL
SGX

Also, has anyone ever calculated the amount of each color combination that would be needed? I know it will be different depending on the vehicle. But is there a ballpark idea like, 100' of each should be enough to rewire 2 FJ40's.

The three most common types of cross-linked automotive wire are:

1.GXL – thin wall, most common type, works with most standard automotive connectors, rated to 125 °C
2.SXL – standard wall, rated to 125 °C
3.TXL – extra thin wall, best for applications that require minimal size and weight, rated to 125 °C

Cross-linked insulation is created by extruding the material through a tube, under heat and pressure, in order to 'cross-link' or change the molecules of the insulation to another state.

SGX is battery cable with cross-linked insulation, rated 125 °C.

If you're running wire in the engine compartment or anywhere there's a lot of heat, make sure you check the temp rating on the jacket. Some cheap wire has insulation that will melt right off.

X2, I wonder how much of each is needed for a full rewire. I have to buy it online because I live in Venezuela, so pulling the harness to meassure is not an option as delivery will take from 1 to 2 months.
If anyone has a ballpark calculation it would be greatly appreciated

I recommend buying your wire from Coolerman here on Mud. I built a whole new harness for my FJ40 using his wire. I'd be happy to discuss it with you this weekend if you're at SMORR.

Unfortunately, it's not easy to figure out how much of each color you'll need without taking the harnesses out of the vehicle and measuring them.

Since yours is a later model FJ40, he may be able to build you one without needing yours for a template. Unfortunately, Mark just posted on here the other day that he is taking some time off from building harnesses due to an illness in the family.

SXL is rated for engine compartment/high heat. I think TXL is too, but with a thinner jacket. Not sure about GXL. I, too, would like to know about length amounts. I have started replacing small sections of harness, trying to use as best connectors as I can afford.

SXL, TXL, and GXL wires are all the same jacket, just applied in different thicknesses. The type of jacket is cross-linked PVC. It's stronger/tougher than regular PVC jacket due to the cross-linking process. This also increases it's resistance to melting.

ccasteel,

Please post up if you find a source for striped TXL wire, not the cheap PVC standard automotive wire. Lots of choices for solid color, but seem to want $$ to custom stripe for 100ft lengths. (My preference 14AWG.)

Generally, you're not going to find short lengths of striped wire like that. If you do, it's because it was a mistake or an overrun. There might be one or two exceptions to that, but generally you might find red wire striped white or black.

If you're not trying to keep it all original looking... Wire typically comes in about 12 different colors so it might be worth just changing a striped wire for something of a unique color in the harness.

If you are, I would look into getting at least 1000 feet of each of the colors you want and sell off the rest to others doing the same thing. One way of doing it might be a group-buy, so to speak. Get 10 people who all want the wire and split the cost of 10000 feet ten ways.

Just a thought.

Thank-you, trailhead. Already have rolls of all the available colors in the appropriate gauges. Trying to keep as original as possible for complete rewire jobs. While I'm prepared to hand stripe wire, I prefer professional striping; I do not want standard small gauge PVC striped-wire as was used back over 40 years ago. Yes, I could order 15-20 rolls of 1000ft wire in the correct gauges, pay exorbitantly to have it striped, and spend years trying to huckster it off, tying up my space, my time, and my funds.

My question was..... has anyone here come across a wire provider company that already has done this and is willing to sell 100ft quantities to small-time restorers, reasonably, at obviously a higher price than solid colors? I have not found such a company, but perhaps someone in the wider group has and would share some details.

I've never seen it. As I said, about the only way you'll find what your looking for is going to be a cold day in hell. Getting the colors you want in the gauge you want just isn't going to happen by accident. I've been playing the wiring game for over 25 years and that is based on my experience and observation.

And I wasn't suggesting you buy it all by yourself. My suggestion was to find several people interested in the same thing you are, getting wire to help complete a restoration. Everybody pitches in their share and you split the wire up between the group.

Jeez! Is it that difficult to understand?

I use GXL and SXL in all my harnesses. SXL for the 10ga charge circuit wires for the added thickness of the insulation and GXL for everything else.

I can supply anyone with 1 to 100' lenghts of any color combo or gauge common on the FJ40/45. I order my wire on 500' to 1000' spools.
I have been slowly adding the BJ40 gauges to my lineup.

Here is a direct link to the list of wire colors and gauges I carry: Wire List

Hope that helps!
