I just met a guy today that is in the process of rebuilding his FJ40 ('71 model with the motor out of a '66 with a '74 carb on it). There is a wire coming out of the carburetor and he is unsure what to do with it. He said the motor was running a little rough whenever he put the carb onto the motor, but when he plugged the wire to a 12v hot, it ran fine. He is wondering if it needs to be hooked directly up to a hot line or switched to the key, switched with a solenoid, or if he just needs to leave it alone and he has another problem.

I checked the wiring diagrams in the tech section with no luck, unless I am missing something.

Any help from you guys would be appreciated. (This guy is helping me look for a 40, so it would be courteous for me to help him out).

Thanks

Any idea if it needs to be fused or anything? If so what amperage?

Thanks again.

It should be fused at the fuse panel. Does not draw much in the way of amps. I think you can run a jumper from the + side of the coil as it is switched already.

Yup, idle solenoid. If he doesn't want to deal with the wire, he can remove the solenoid, cut off the plunger and re-install. Then he can cut off the wire too.

Yes, this is just how it's done.

The magnetic switch/solenoid is a way to prevent engine run-on when the ignition is turned off, by plugging off the gas supply to the carburetor. It's pretty standard on carbs after about 1966. It's only ever an issue if it gets stuck in the closed position.
