It sucks when trying to unwind and chase wiring. Use Tesa Tape.
 
You are build a wiring harness. If not harness tape, use split conduit if it must be conveniently serviced. You can do a non-adhesive wrap under a real tape, like OEMs do, so that you can take it apart if needed.
 
Plus the adhesive tape becomes worthless for protection after the adhesive melts from heat in the engine compartment.
 
I'm pretty sure that the vapors of the engine bay have eaten away at self-vulcanizing wrap that I used. It looks like mice chewed at it - must have been interesting, or I over stretched it. It is on the battery +. I use self-vulcanizing where I need to make an extra layer of weather protection around connectors, under the regular vinyl UV resistant tape that so many people have been using for as long as I can remember - ugly nasty stuff. I'm pretty sure that the alcohol on my breath alone would destroy your best self-vulcanizing wrap. One thing about old cars is that the soft stuff that is new rarely lasts.
