Is there a 'hot' upgrade for the top mounted wipers on my '66 FJ40? They truly suck.

Peter

Several!
You can disassemble the motors you have and clean them, install new brushes, polish the commutator and lube the shafts...
You can try to retrofit a universal wiper motor if yours can't be made usable by doing the above...
You can swap out windshields to get the later single motor wiper setup...

What exactly are your wipers not doing?

I replaced both motors, they work. But between the week arms and the lousy wipers themselves, they don't wipe very well. On my FJ60, you can replace the arms with T100 arms and it makes a world of different. I was hoping there was an arm/blade replacement that would make them actually wipe better.

I am in the same boat....keep me posted if you come up with anything, I will do the same.

There was discussion around this - seemed like the consensus was the design is bad hence the switch to the lower windshield setup. I rebuilt my motor and got new aftermarket blades thinking it was going to make a big difference. I simply just don't drive it when it rains. But everything sure looks pretty!

Late model lower mounted wipers and late model windshield frame. I couldn't wait to get rid of the top mounted wipers.

Form over function... ;)

Ginmtg, you arms and blades look totally different from mine. Maybe I don't even have the right arms.

Thanks for the info. I'll try springs and see what else I can figure out, but I'll also keep an eye out for a later model windshield frame.

This is the 1970'ish wiper motor set up in my 1965 FJ45. I had to have a new shorter cable made between the main motor gear box and the drivers side gear box. I also had to shorten both the 1970 wiper arms (drill and tap) and wiper blades for the smaller 1965 windshield frame.

My wiper arm springs are weak and have sucked for years. What is a suitable replacement, perhaps from a later model vehicle? I think my '76 has 11 inch wiper arms.

I nice coat of RainX works wonders, even with questionable wipers. At highways speeds you may not even need the wipers with light rain and RainX.

Says the dude with the sweet triple lower wiper setup... ;)
