Hello,
I have an '89 FJ62 which needs a new windshield. How much should I expect to pay? I was given a quote of $325 and was told that some sort of rubber gasket should be replaced when the new glass in installed. If it matters, I'm in College Station, TX. Thanks for any information.

I got the windshield replaced on my FJ60 about a year ago (for the 3rd time) in Houston, and it ran about $ 250.00 total (IIRC). Call around for prices as I noticed that it varied quite a bit.

Good Luck,

had mine done last year...just over $100 with my "biz" discount.

Factory glass and factory rubber seal will *fit* better. (i.e. seal better agains moisture). If moisture is not a problem (live in a desert ?) and you don't have to worry about rotting out you window channels ... heck get aftermarket glass and save some bucks.

Cheers,
Cahil

check with Toyota for the glass, I was REALLY shocked that all the side glass was cheaper than the glass shop could get aftermarket(at cost) Not sure about a front window

Every time I get a cold call from a glass shop "Do you have a cracked or chipped windshield?" I say "Why yes, yes I do, it's a 1973 FJ55." They stumble on that for a while, tell me they'll get back with me and never do. I haven't found a single shop in town that can get 55 front windshields.

nuclearlemon,
You are in the Denver area, right? Where did you get your windsheild done and are you happy with the result?

Thanks.

I replaced my 60 windshield about 4 months ago. I went to Harmon autoglass. I think they changed names and ownership now, but I bought the gasket and front glass from them. One guy tried to do the install in their shop and he had to call for back up. It took two “professional” guys about 4 hours to get the glass in properly. It sucked waiting around, but they did a good job.

You have to pay very close attention to the headliner above and on the side of the windshield. The headliner wraps under the gasket and glues to the frame. If you get someone who doesn’t know what they are doing, they will wrinkle the heck out of your headliner. It’s a tough job, so I would spend the money and get it done right.

I went through this just a month after buying the Curiser. If I had to do it again, I would buy the windshield and gasket from Toyota, instead of an aftermarket from the glass place.

FYI: This old “style” windshield uses the gasket to bond the windshield to the frame, and it is important not to allow water to penetrate the gasket. Interestingly, there is no glue involved. If there is glue on your gasket, then at one time the PO had a leak. This is a temporarily fix. When the windshield is removed, the gasket often time is destroyed or damaged, and hence it does not seal properly. It is imperative that you buy a new one for your install.

New windshields are just glued in to the frame and are easy to pop out and in.

Good luck!

Ditto on everything Ben said.

I've experienced windshield replacments in several 60 /62's. Every time it took two guys - and it took them many hours. One company insisted on coming to us to do it in our space. After about 2 hours of trying the kid was almost in tears, exclaimed that the truck had to have been rolled, and ran off never to be seen again. We needed the truck the next morning, so a lawywer buddy called them and within an hour the manager and shop "pro" showed up, worked a good solid two hours and got it in.

We went through 2 or 3 windshileds per year, so after that they always ordered a Toyota glass and gasket and only the "pro" touched our trucks.

It usually cost about $400, charged to insurance. By the way, the glass insurance cost us only $8 per year per truck!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up taking it to a local place that was suggested by the Toyota dealership. It took one guy about an hour to do at a cost of $267.

yes, i'm happy. i had quick set put it in because i used to work with the owner. the only problem was a little bit of a wrinkle in the headliner above the driver, barely noticeable.

Man. Y'all suck. I've had a perfect windshield in the 60 the whole time I've owned it.
Wed a.m. on my way home from checking on a local shop, I get on the freeway and *BAM!*
I get a rock-induced spiderweb in my field of view.
Every time a new subject comes up on this board, it happens to my rig. Let's start some

Did that included those little tiny chrome trim pieces that slide into the gasket?

When i pulled my windshield out to repair the rust, we destroyed those stupid little chrome trim pieces and when they installed the windshield, they claimed that they would replace them but they didnt and they are a dealer only item that costs me $112!!!

Just an FYI!!! Be careful with those little tiny chrome pieces!!

You can get that crack fixed before it gets too large and have to replace the whole windshield. Sometimes the insurance company picks up the repair bill for the small repair.
