Windshield-Frame Anticorrosive Treatment???

Hi mates, for a couple of years I was looking for the windshield-frame until a week ago and got to buy a windshield-frame of a BJ-73 (100 €), his condition is excellent (as if he had purchased new on Toyota). :grinpimp:

There any specific treatment or work to prevent corrosion in the windshield-frame? :wrench:

I hope your help please...

Hi Lulo,
what I did was to buy a spraycan Valvoline Tectyl+ML spray, Partnr.: 20110.
This can has a long (approx 35 cm) thin hose with nozzle that sprays the anti-rust goo in a nice round pattern.
I then inserted the hose trough any hole I could find in the windowframe as deep as I could and then, whilst spraying constantly, pulled the hose back.
The frame is now 14 years old and has no sign of rust.
If you want you can see a picture of that can on THIS page. It is in Dutch and you will have to click the small image on the right hand side below the price indication of 10.95 €, at the line 'Klik om te vergroten' to see the image of the rattlecan properly.

X2 for the Rust Check. It was 1988 when I bought (my first Cruiser) a 1980 FJ 40 56,000 kms. The salesman at Waneta Plaza Toyota told me to go to a certain bodyshop to rust proof the 40. Back then (88) for 110.00 the shop drilled holes everywhere to spray the rust check rockers and yes the windshield frame on the 40 and then covered the holes with these plugs. It is a mixture of WD 40 and ATF from what I was told.

I was looking around for a windscreen frame for a while. Ended up ordering a Fiberglass one a few days ago.
$400 Australian. Toyota factory frames were about $800. Not many secondhand ones around and if you can
get one their usually rusted. The fiberglass frame weight 6.5 kgs. How much do the metal ones weigh Lulo?

Cheers.

you boys need to start buying your parts from Dave at Japan 4X4. i get the new factory for roughly $500 (or was it less?)
Krown, if applied PROPERLY is the best rust preventive you can get for your cruiser.

i beleive that was $500 delivered. it isn't as much as you might think. it is bulky but doesn't weigh squat.

Another way to prevent rust in the frame is to ventilate the car by leaving the windows down a little .
The moisture is largely from condensation mixed with CO2 from your breath and forms a mildly corrosive acid

Hey Lulo,

Have have you removed the windshield frame yet? Just wanted to know if there was any rust under it?
I'll be pulling mine out in a week or two and hoping that the rust is confined to the the frame and not moved to the main body.

Cheers.

That's a good price crushers. My Fiberglass one was $400 Aussie/$360 CDN free delivery and will never rust:)

i noted this on another window frame thread somewhere but just be carefull when jumping in on your cruisers pulling on the jesus bar ,a mate with a fibgls one the bolts slowy wore the bolt holes bigger and bigger till one day jumping in and pulled the jesus bar out in his hand and the snorkle bolts vibrated holes through it and he ended up putting big ugly bolts right through it then ended up geting a steel frame

Thanks Clint,

I'll watch out for that stuff. There seems to be upsides and downsides to most mods and there are trade offs that I'll
have to live with. Once the new frame is in and I rust proof the body and chassis hopefully I can get back into building
it up for expedition. Going to be cleaning and rubberising the underside of the body and spraying Lanolin or some type
of non smelly fish oil in the inside of the frame and body panels.

Cheers matey's

Just take it all off no roof, no window frame no rust;)

i work with fiberglass panels everyday, coarse threads are better than fine.
heard of the term nutzerts? they work VERY well in this kind of aplication or if the builder of the frame did his home work there should be a piece of aluminum where you need to bolt mounting points.

Hey Rosco,

I dont know about the build quality of the windscreen frame. Its in gelcoat. hope its a good fit.

This is it:

I not remove my windshield-frame yet. I hope so dont find rust in the body

My "new" frame i bought on excellent condition :grinpimp:

...a German friend told me that a good treatment is to apply foam piloiuretano inside the frame.

I also commented that care must be taken when using polyurethane foam as it can even bend the metal, so I will comment that there are different types of polyurethane foam, even my cousin told me the ability to galvanize the frame

mmm ...???

I do not know what to do
